Big question

So I'm going out of town for a couple weeks and away from my son, so I wanted to do something extra fun with him before I leave. He's 13 and loves ripping although we typically only go as high as some modern or vintage as high as 1985 football or 1983 baseball...although it's been months.

So here is the big question. Which box should I rip with him?

1980 baseball
1981 football
1984 football
1986 football

All boxes are equally mint and bbce authenticated.

Tough call, but any of those FB boxes are a great option. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Good idea....however...He'll make me pick as he doesn't want to be the one to make the mistake should it go wrong. I also think he'd go for 84 almost without question. He's ripped a few boxes of 85s with me so Elway and Marino have become monsters to him.

My concern with 84 is the tilt factor...always bums me out when I open a pack of 84 and get a big card with tilt. Never know what to do with those cards so they sit in a box, yawn.

I'm leaning towards 81 or 86. 86 is fun with Rice and Young, while 81 is fun for Montana. Of course other hits are in both but the major ones are what we play for!!!!

more attractive than 81s. MANY more players he'd probably know. Less chance of total dud single packs.

86 is my favorite set so that gets my vote. Super fun rip with better looking cards than the 81 and many more hits. 84 would be my second choice. Another nice looking set loaded with HOF RC's. Have fun!

All of those are fun rips but I'm with the 86 crew. There's so many more hits in that issue than the rest. Let us know how it goes, have fun!

1986 and 1981 a close second.

Can't wait till my son gets older so we can open boxes. Maybe I should start hoarding some boxes now before prices get even more outta hand?

Thanks guys. 1986 it is. It'll happen Friday night..I'll post pictures of the best..I've never ripped an 86 box, not even back in the day. Should be cool.

I don't have any kids. I've been trying to get my 9 year old nephew interested in sports cards. No luck so far. He does have a small collection of Pokemon cards tho. I'll keep working on him.

Enjoying the hobby with your son at this level has to be such a tremendously rewarding activity. I know that a significant segment of my unopened is destined for the same fate as my kids get older. Looking forward to the results of your rip!

It's fun. He started Pokemon back in the day and as much as I wanted to hook him on sports cards I couldn't get it done...so I bought more and more Pokemon and discovered charizard is a monster and even better in mint condition...he became a baseball and soccer player. Baseball cards didn't stick but wow did he want soccer cards and I yawned through some and then big yawn along with him in mls 2013...he wanted panini World Cup 2014...yes we have messi and others auto. It was only last year that he began to appreciate the industry on a somewhat mature level..he's awesome. I'd rather he open every pack and watch his excitement when he gets a hit that he knows I'll love. We opened some packs of 1982 topps baseball and he almost lost it when I freaked when he pulled a Ripken. When I told him what to look for prior to the Ripken it didn't comprehend with him but when he hit it, I freaked, then he freaked...best part was it was an easy 8 or 9 quality. He loves warren moon because he's used to 1985...and of course the other studs..but wait til he sees me go berzerko when he hits a rice.

Hope this all made sense..I'm at a fund raiser drinking gentlemans jack, wahoo.

The third pack we hit a Young...most of the hits are very well centered but almost every one has a corner issue...not one chance at a 10 but might have a 8.5 or 9 in here...it was fun with my son but a little disappointed in the quality...the box was pristine but as I said almost each one had a corner issue...when I get back from my trip I'll scan the best ones and see if you guys think they're worth grading.

Bummer on the persistent corner issues. Frustrating.

But, 2 Reggie, 2 Bruce, a Boomer, Young and Rice all while ripping with kid...priceless.

At least you got some major star power, but more importantly, an amazing experience with your son. Those are memories that you will both have for a lifetime. Seems like you have some fairly major dry powder in the unopened arsenal and are maximizing the rips to the fullest.

From your earlier post, I too would be ecstatic with some big 80s BBC pulls like Ripken! What a thrill for you and for him.
