Assistance to ID Byzantine coin + what is the best Byzantine coin reference work?

Recently bought this piece. It was fairly inexpensive and thought I would take a chance.

It was unceremoniously listed as 12-14th century, which may/may not be correct.

Any ID help, or guidance on where/how to ID this piece would be most appreciated image

And of course, what is the best, most comprehensive Byzantine reference book out there?

I'm at a coin show now, and the ancient dealer next to me thinks it's 12th century Bulgaria.

His Byzantine reference choice is ERICII by rasuel Suarez? Not sure on spelling.

Thanks! I also have the ERIC II, but I'm away from home now. I haven't opened the Byzantine section of that book yet.

Looks like a Bulgarian grosch to me as well.

David Sear's Byzantine Coins and their Values is the best bang for your buck on Byzantine. Not the most comprehensive, but very good for the money.

The most comprehensive Byzantine reference is probably the Catalogue of the Byzantine Coins in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection and in the Whittemore Collection, but it's a 3 volume set that costs about $500.00 I think.
