This is for those who collect crowns. To this date, Davenport's series by century and catalog numbers are the primary reference.

<< <i>... Some of Davenport’s first cataloging appeared as articles in the American Numismatic Association’s journal The Numismatist and in Lee F. Hewitt’s Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine during the 1940’s ... >>

I feel like all the great literature began this way. Publishing snippets in journals and newsweeklies was a great way to test the market, I suppose. If the issues sell well, write the book!

edit: the photo shows his ANA life membership #44 ... practically a founding member! Must have been exciting to be part of the early days.

A nice article. Thanks Zohar. I've still got the Davenport book you provided and have consulted it many times. I learn something each time I read/consult a good numismatic reference.

Excellent article. The list of his publications is most helpful. I would love to get my hands on the "European Crowns, 1484-1600" or the "German Talers, 1500-1600" guide some day.

I did find it interesting that my particular focus is the coinage from the "spiritual lords", which are described as the ruling bishops and abbots of major monasteries. I have not seen this corner of German States coinage described in this way.
