    Linkified:

    Your obverse

    Your reverse

(I could have posted the images directly in this reply, but didn't, since they're uncropped and rather wide.)

Neat coin. Looks like it might have been a detector find- I think I see some earthen patina in areas of the reverse.

Can't really give you a clear valuation, but by comparison, I spent approximately $300 on mine (before slabbing).

Looks like it is a John short cross penny, with moneyer Walter, mint London(?)
Not 100% sure on the attribution. My knowledge of British hammered coins ends after the Norman period.

Coins of John are fairly common. In high grade, this coin could certainly be worth a few hundred dollars. Given this particular coin's condition, however, I'd say it's probably worth about $30. Unless of course it is a rare variety, which I could not tell you.
  • Don't know anything about the time period of this coin-but for what it is worth-it looks like a casting to me????

Do you think $150 is a good bargain for it ?

Don't really know for sure- sorry.

I bought mine because I liked it, but I am definitely no expert on medieval hammered silver.

Since Nap thinks there's a chance it may only be worth $30, I suggest more research before asking $150 to sell. Besides, if this turns out to be a rare variety, and you only get $150, you may be disappointed.

I think this coin suffers more from a weak strike than from heavy wear, per se, but it still has a poor portrait.

Were it a coin of King Stephen, or an early (Tealby) penny of Henry II, then it would be considered a good strike!
But by the time of King John the overall quality of coinage in England had improved dramatically. Most pennies of King John have good portraits and readable legends.

Here is a King John coin for sale from a UK dealer: Penny of King John
I presume that coin is a common variety, and it is for sale for 50 pounds. Since the condition of the portrait on yours is poorer, I would assume it would be worth more like $30, perhaps $40-50 at full retail, but again, unless this is a rare variety, I am not seeing much more value in this particular coin.

Again, a coin of King John in EF condition can be worth several hundred dollars, but yours is not in such condition.

I tried to attribute your coin based on the Spink guide, but I cannot really tell which variety it is.

What I can say is that it is not a 5a penny. 5a pennies have a reversed 'S' on the obverse legend, which your coin does not. So it's probably variety 5b, 5c, or 6a. None of these varieties are considered rare. However I'm sure there are some less common moneyers and mints.

From my 2013 book, 5b, 5c, and 6a pennies of John are listed at 65.00, 65.00, and 60.00 each (respectively) in Fine condition. That's in British pounds. I do not believe your coin is in good enough condition to call "Fine". The reverse of your coin is close to VF but the weak obverse would hold drop the overall grade.

Thanks for the link to that site, which I hadn't seen before. I had fun browsing it, and who knows... I saw a Lizzie I sixpence I rather liked. I'll probably browse there some more later.
