Why vest pocket dealers drink - part II

Anyone who sells by a website or runs ads in CL / kijiji/ etc has surely received some scam attempts. Usually it involves fraudulent / spoof paypal payments. Sometimes they "pay" (always a spoof email) an amount higher than the asking price, and then request a transfer of the "excess" funds to them via western union. A tell-tale sign is when they say their "shipping agent" can come pick the item up.

I continually mess with these guys from alternate email accounts when they contact me. Anything from speaking gibberish, foreign languages, sexual advances, etc. Recently I stepped up my game and am in talks with one of them trying to convince them that I can't get to a western union branch, but that I can give the their shipping agent the excess money in cash when they come to pick it up. The address I've given them is one of a local cop shop image

So today the drink is celebratory! image

    Drink and be merry!

I would warn you though: don't bait the scammer. These people may be dumb but some of them are hardened criminals who have no problem stealing and possibly worse. Any emails you send from your home, even from alternate email accounts, could potentially be traced to your physical location.

If you get a scam attempt, report it and delete it.

Reporting is a waste of time, sadly. I once received one of those scams ... cashier's check actually arrived in my mailbox (no, I did not give them my address nor exchange any emails with them) ... anyway I took the cashier's check to my bank and had them analyze it. They concluded it was indeed fake. I took the original check and envelope to my police department. Filed case paperwork and spoke to a detective for about half an hour. Nothing ever happened. Waste of time. They didn't even care.
