My first Lesbian coin!!!

Hope everyone had a good night at the Heritage auction. Overall I did not fair well, got blown out on a couple of pieces I really wanted, but I saw some going really cheap I thought. I did manage to pick up two coins tonight.

LESBOS. Mytilene. Ca. 521-478 BC. EL Hecte (10mm, 2.52 gm, 5h). Head of roaring lion right / Incuse head of cow right; rectangular punch behind. HGC 6, 938. Bodenstedt 13. NGC Choice XF 4/5 - 4/5.

Well I guess people from Lesbos would be called Lesbians, wouldn't they?

AEOLIS. Myrina. Ca. 155-145 BC. AR tetradrachm (30mm, 15.91 gm, 12h). Stephanophoric issue. Laureate head of Apollo right / MYPINAIÙN, Apollo standing right, holding phiale and branch; at feet to right, omphalos and amphora; monogram in left field. Sacks Issue 24. SNG Copenhagen -. NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 5/5.

  • They say your electrum is from Lesbos... not that there's anything wrong with that. (Seinfeld, anyone? image)

Very nice acquisitions! I love that Myrina.

Excellent Jeff - that Myrina is very nice!

I was beat up on most of the pieces that I was tracking. Did pickup one which I will post later.

TIF2 - are you in the creative/graphic arts/design business - you sure know how to create expressive visuals in your posts! Very nice.

  • Thanks, Z. No, I just spend a lot of time playing with pictures in Photoshop Elements.

Great acquisition! I have a similar coin which I'll be posting soon - feel free to steal my writeup image

I was outbid on a few lots at Heritage but did win a nice impulse buy, also electrum and for a good price, and I won my primary focus for an appreciable discount to my max bid, so I'm happy!

"One meaning of the word lesbian derives from the poems of Sappho, who was born in Lesbos and who wrote with powerful emotional content directed toward other women. Due to this association, Lesbos and especially the town of Eresos, her birthplace, are visited frequently by lesbian tourists"

Absolutely. That is the primary meaning of the word. The other meaning is derived from the reputed homosexual band associated with the ancient poetess, Sappho of Lesbos.

Both pieces are super cool but that Aeolis piece is such a beautiful piece. The head of Apollo really pops and I love the surfaces.

Also, I really really need to learn my Greek city-states better. :-/
