75' Topps BB Wax Box on EBay

$12,499 for a full, unopened box of wax packs 😦. Wow, this just blows my mind. I know this is a pie-in-the-sky number...but, man this is getting out of control. Any opinions on the "actual" value of this box? If a 75' Mini is $3000 then shouldn't this box be in the $6-$7K range? Love to get some feedback from you guys.

maybe I am old fashioned but I can't even remotely understand how 1974 and 1975 wax packs can be worth and selling for almost 300 a pack. It just does mesh with my mind nor does there seem to be any logic to it that I can wrap my mind around.

I hear you, Duncan--it's hard for me to wrap my mind around 78 boxes going for $2,500, too, LOL..

I think in the current market a full 1975 regular box should be in the 8000-8400 range.

I would say a Mini box would always go for more than a 75 regular box.

In that case, though, David, a 74 box should retail for about the same, but I believe they go for a bit more. 75 regular wax packs actually command more than 74 packs in the current market and there have been more 74 box sales in recent years.

There are two collectors buying unopened boxes. A person collecting unopened boxes to stay sealed is going to pay more for a high end box and the price for let's say 1974 is going to be $11-12k. The person who wants to crack the packs will not find the same value to that box because very few cards are worth the $300 value per pack. 1975 is a different story because of the value of star cards and tough commons. I personally think a 1975 Topps wax box is in the $9K range.

Do you guys remember when the 75T mini carried a "premium?"

In 1993 - Tuff Stuff had the mini's at 150% - I remember some as high as 2X.

I'm guessing there was way more of the product than they thought back then?

Mike, that is an interesting point--for years, there was a perception that because minis were released only in certain test makets (primarily MI and CA) that they were much scarcer than their full-sized counterparts. In reality, though, many more mini packs and boxes were saved, likely due to them being a "limited" issue in the first place, so that fast forward to today and after the Conlon estate liquidation, they are by far more plentiful than their full-sized counterparts. I also remember that 10-15 years ago, there was a huge premium on mini cellos vs regular 75 cellos, but that premium has evaporated over the years, too, as more mini cello packs surfaced and came to market. The one issue that is truly scarce for the mini packs is the mini rack, which very seldom come up for sale.

Actually in the last 2-3 years the sightings and sales of both 1974 and 1975 boxes have
been sparse. You could count each year by itself on a single hand.

However, you also need to consider that 1974 is a much scarcer year in wax than 1975 based
on the production. The 1974 full set packaging took up a bunch of the 74 production. There was
no equivalent in 1975 (the minis were a separate production done on a limited scale).

As a consequence, all other 1974 packagings had reduced volumes when compared to other
years in that era. Ever notice how uncommon it is to find 74 racks and cellos too?

While 74 lacked the superstar RC power of 75, it makes up for it on its scarcity.

Raw 1975 wax packs can still be had for $200 (that's how the 36th pack for the box
currently listed on eBay was added to complete the box a few weeks ago).

And for what it's worth, I put the current market value of a 74 box at about 9000-9500.

The real questions that need to be considered on boxes like these are:

    1) Are there potential buyers out there who have grown impatient enough waiting
for boxes like these to come available that they are willing to overpay just to get the
    boxes now?

    2) How much of a premium are they willing to pay?

    3) What premium (if any) does the BBCE authentication give to the offered item (see my other thread)?

    Food for thought.

74 cellos and racks are definitely scarcer than regular 75 cellos and racks, no question. 74 wax, OTOH, is far more plentiful than regular 75 wax.

David, I would agree with you price estimate of 9K-9500K on the 74 wax box, with a regular 75 box at around 9K, imho.

In either case, no way to know for sure if box is fully intact and original unless it's marked FASC. The 75 box in the OP is not fully original, but authentic.
