1979 Topps Baseball - Hypothetical

I'm curious because I might have a lead on a box or two of unopened 1979 Topps Baseball and I'm just not that versed in purchasing vintage baseball (and don't have tons of cash to make mistakes with)...
What would be a good price for a box (if you inspected them and felt confident that they were legit)?
Thank you for any feedback.

How much are they asking? Hypothetically.

<< <i>They are currently around $2k at BBCE, but that is with their authentication of course. And with the market possibly finally taking a break from its climb, I'd say $1,250 would be what I would be comfortable going up to. >>
CPA,
What is giving you a feeling for the unopened wax market "taking a break" from its climb?

I don't think the entire unopened market is "taking a break". A few of the boxes that made huge price jumps are starting to come back down. 1979 and 1980 baseball boxes are the first boxes that come to mind.

I'd listen to this. My first reaction was -- unauthenticated and I have to look for roller marks and corners and all that -- $1200/box.

Yes, I should have qualified my post. Based on what I've seen, the run up of 1978 to 1980 which outpaced other years seems to be leveling off. I still see movement on the 1981 to 1985 stuff. But I should qualify everything in that this is in my opinion only and I've been wrong before, LOL.

The guy is local. Actually a couple of towns away. But he is asking $1200 per box and has two available. They appear to be in fantastic condition based upon a few photos, but I would have to scope the back and corners up close to be sure.
It's quite possible he would take $2000 for both, but that's just a guess.

I recently purchased two 1978 Topps Baseball wax packs with roller marks that were lined up perfectly. Each pack contained less than 14 cards and the wrong size gum.
<< <i>Thank you for your input, everyone.

Sounds fair to me. It would be worth it to send it into BBCE imo, unless you are ripping them.

Feel free to post the pictures here if you want more eyes on it...I'd rather spend a little bit more and get one solid box from a reputable source, but that's me. You're really not getting a great deal unless they are pretty nice.

<< <i>Just my "rookie" opinion on unopened. Boxes look a little rough (corners). Don't know if that is indictitive of whats inside quality wise. If box was abused/mishandled etc. Would the seller, upon knowing you may be sending it in to BBCE to be authenticated, be willing to offer you any guarantees/return privlleges if it fails the "sniff" test? >>
When Steve grades wax boxes does he check every pack? Just curious.
IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED

Hey Mikey
I've read where some will use glue - e.g. crazy glue - to reseal packs. For those with a good "nose" - they may smell the pack for glue residue. I've also read where it doesn't hurt to put a black light on the pack to detect glue residue/overspill.
Also, packs with less cards, as such, doesn't scare me since that can happen at the factory. But, the wrong gum? Dead giveaway.
