Do you have any idea when the item was signed? It is not typical of Willie Mays' current autograph.
"Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood."
LarkinCollector - I appreciate your opinion. The "W" looks different. Almost like a star.
MikeyP - Almost everything in the lot was from 1986-1988. The card is from 1984. I'm guessing right around that time. I left a message with the seller to see if he had any idea.

That was the red flag for me, I've never seen the star. I was using an early-mid 70s auto for my comparison, so I'm not sure what his mid-80s auto looked like.

The overall appearance of the autograph would place it in that time period. I have never seen Willie Mays autograph his name with a star in place of the "W" before. That is what concerns me the most about it. If anyone is able to find an image of an exemplar that includes a star in place of the "W", I would really like to see it.

Definitely not. I have his and I have asked him about his signature and he told me he rarely writes anything else but his name. No embellishments like a star or HOF maybe his #24. My eBay photo has me with Mays.
Tallulah Bankhead — 'There have been only two geniuses in the world. Willie Mays and Willie Shakespeare.'

Willie Mays was actually much more careful with his autograph in the past. Here is a link to some very good exemplars.

Craig, Are you sure that it is actually signed? A while back (late 70s/early 80s), Renata Galasso had a card set she was selling and I believe the backs of some or all of the cards made up a shot of a run of signed Mays cards. It reminds me of that.
I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.
I met Willie Mays and got his autograph in person in the early 90's at a card show. The auto I have does not look anything like the one you have. I am not an expert by any means on autos and I know his autograph today looks much different than mine from the 90's, but I would say no on yours.
