Anything you'd pay almost anything to acquire? (white whale discussion)

Scouring eBay and the boards every day for the same item has got me thinking about whether there's something out there that you'd basically pay anything for if it was made available for sale -

Mine is a 64-65 Tallboy hockey wrapper. I have seen a grand total of one for sale in the past 7 years. Forget white whale, more like the Loch Ness monster!
Go Dodgers!

  • I wouldn't pay anything obviously but I'd overpay in a minute for a nicely centered 55 Clemente in a PSA 7. Been looking for one for awhile now and it still eludes me!!!!
  • Signed 1961 Parkhurst Jacques Plante. Probably doesn't exist, but there's a chance...

I don't know that there's a card I would have pay ANY amount for but...if I had unlimited funds, I definitely would have bought the 1980 Olympic hockey jerseys that Mike Eruzione auctioned last year. The two jerseys sold for roughly a million bucks combined. If I won a gigantic powerball, I'd have no problem paying 5 or 10 times that amount, easy.

Like the gentleman said above, not anything obviously, but I'd pay a pretty strong price for a Frederick Foto Ruth. With only 4 known to exist (one is a cross, and am not counting rumors of one or two raw examples out there) I do not expect to get a crack at one anytime soon. All the slabbed ones are for now locked up in permanent collections; luckily a good friend owns one and lets me hold it whenever I visit him in NYC.

TheMick6, this card below is only a 6.5 but should at least be good eye candy for the centered 55 Clemente fan; I wanted a centered one, too, and as you said, a premium was paid relative to the average specimen. 55 Clemente has gotta be one of the most routinely OC star rc's around.

1961Topps dice game Brooks Robinson....1967 topps disc Brooks and..... 1967? 68 Topps 3d prototype Brooks Robinson.
wish I had the cash and I wish they came up for sale.
  • Oh man!!! Being a centering junkie I absolutely love that Clemente! If that's yours and you wanted to unload that's the type if card I over do it on. That's one beautiful card there my friend! WOW

The 61 Dice and 3D Prototype have both sold in the not too distant past....for a lot
    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955
    Fleer Baseball-1923, 1959-2007

    Al
  • Ok I just have to ask why in the hell isn't that at least a seven everyone that chases that card knows about the centering issues I'd assume that centering even with slightly soft sixish corners equals seven with that card. I'd assume that fetches seven prices anyway.

So I guess a complete pack is NOT what you want? LOL Not mine, but taken from the April 7, 2005 EAC Gallery Alan Rosen Collection Auction:

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • Would love to obtain a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (R) in PSA 9 grade, would be willing to pay to obtain one! Estimates probably around $150,000 for a PSA 9, who knows.

Considering an 8.5 sold for over $270k in 2013 through REA, you may want to reconsider your estimate.

I'd pay a pretty penny for a 1922 Zeenut Jim Thorpe with coupon....but I'm not sure one is even documented to exist.

I'd also pay quite handsomely for a 1982 FBI Disc or 1977 Topps Venezuelan Mike Schmidt cards in top grade
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

The guys above are spot on about the PSA 9 Mick-- 150k is beyond low these days.

(Mick6, thought you would dig. As a fellow centering fiend I love seeing a good pic myself. My collecting focuses on finding usually OC cards with anomalously good centering. Would probably have 7'd before the .5 system, but happy regardless since guys who know the card well know a great one when they see it, no matter the grade. And yep, you are right on, as I paid 7 money from the prior Clemente collector owner who also paid 7 money when he acquired it. Was more than happy to; actually chose it over a bunch of 7s, as it put a sick beating on almost every 7 I saw at the time.)

Thanks for the teaser Doug! I actually won a couple items in that auction that I foolishly sold long ago. I recall thinking $5k was a high price for that pack (which it may have been at the time). I'd love to get my hands on it for that price nowadays! Wrapper would probably command $1500 if it was ever available.
    Go Dodgers!
  • DM23HOF,

That's a keeper for sure. Ive seen my share of off centered 7's that still fetch crazy prices. That's my white whale I was talking to the guys at the Mile High booth in Chantilly to see if they had one and they said the market for nice Clemente's is skyrocketing. Looks like it will have to continue to be my whale until I can bring myself to part with a few things. One more time though.......WOW!!! Great card man

1985 Dominican League Stickers #149 Fred McGriff

This is the first card on my checklist for Fred McGriff. I have seen s picture of one online but that's it. Not sure what I would go up to but I would pay a decent price for one.

    1967 Topps BB #355 Yastrzemski PSA 10
    or
1957 Topps Hky #10 Bucyk PSA 8 or PSA 9 which is a POP 1

I have only seen ONE Bucyk PSA 8 up for auction and the centering was worse than my PSA 7, and I think it went for over $2000.00.

    Someday, Maybe ....
