Goldberg Auctions

Now normally I don't like to discuss upcoming sales I am going to bid in, but I'll make an exception this time. The photography in the Roman Denarii catalog is something to be seen, absolutely incredible.

I wonder if SmEagle1795 images for them

I don't (I believe their photographer posts here from time to time). They do indeed take some wonderful images, and are the most truthful of auction houses from what I've seen.
The catalog is absolutely amazing. Two huge books, with fantastic content, and stunning images.
Now I feel compelled to find something to bid on, if only to return the favor...

<< <i>I was blown away yesterday when I got their printed catalog delivered to my house via FedEx - and I live in Israel, so this is not something to be underestimated. I only ever bid (and won) a single lot on a Goldberg auction, in their previous numismatic sale.

And that's exactly why you've received it my friend. I too received their cats for two-three times after a successful bid, but without bids no catalogues. I've now made a specific minimal selection of auction houses that I bid, not necessarily to win, but to get the printed copies, Sincona first, after Numismatica Genevensis of course.
Speaking of catalogues, has anybody here ,other than myself, ordered the Lissner catalogue of the upcoming auction in late July, early August? It's been conducted by three auction companies, (CNG, St James and one more), and their catalogue is at $100, but it's worth it if you like to honor your numismatic library.

Nice work Lyle! The recognition is deserved.
Its really nice to see coin imaging elevate to this level, allowing us all to share the beauty of the coins. The hobby has come a long way from the mail in lists, b/w images etc.. I guess this is a result of the rapid change witnessed in the business model of selling/purchasing coins "blindly" in the virtual global coin/auction marketplace. With the exception of coin shows, the local coin shop concept has been replaced/supplemented with an online presence, imaging taking a lead role in replacing the physical review.
Online shops as CRO, Northeast Coin, Atlas, and others have emphasized imaging as part of the website presentation.
Our forum friend, brg5658, has elevated the collector/amateur driven imaging to the highest professional standards. This is night and day compared with what I can do or what the folks that sold me these coins presented upon purchase LINK

<< <i>Nope, won't let me log in at all, gets to the live auction login screen and then won't do anything. Guess I'm screwed today, or at least their consignors are. >>
I managed to log in by clicking the "Catalog" tab, then logging in, then switching to the "Live Sale" tab, although there are still no lots loaded/available to be bid on.

<< <i>I also got in yet blank screen. Called them and they haven't started. I was scolded to be patient by the operator. Maybe they should state "estimated start time" >>
The word from the auction floor is that they're having some website problems and wider issues with processing bids that came in at the last minute. There are a number of bidders in the room but it hasn't started yet.

<< <i>The great news is I think I won the one lot I really wanted, Odysseus and his dog. Of course I won't really know for a couple of days when they post results and invoices.
Fantastic! Hope you got it!

Just dipping my toes in these ancient waters.
This was actually my very first time bidding (and winning) with an auction house.

<< <i>I went 0/2 on the Denarii collection. Both examples I bid on went for a lot more than expected. I really wanted a Marcus Aurelius coin, and either base a collection on him in various denominations and family (Faustina, Commodus), or do one of "The Five Good Emperors" - the more likely route since I've also always wanted a Hadrian coin and I like to keep my sets small because my interests shift so much. But I DID just win this Sestertius. Goldberg Link. I thought the portrait was quite striking.

Nice sestertius! I'm also building a Five Good Emperor set and if you're looking for more info on them, here are a couple posts from me:
Antoninus Pius
Nerva
If you're feeling ambitious, you may want to also include Aelius as well - his coins are often very attractive and well designed.
I suggest getting a coin from Hadrian's travel series - they are very attractive types with great portrait styles. Mine is not from the travel series but I intend to upgrade at some point (he minted them in denarii and aurei, in case you aren't looking to shell out for the gold examples):

<< <i>Thanks, everyone. I've even following your posts, SmEagle. Your coins are exquisite and write ups very informative. I'm not sure if I'll continue on with ancients, but learning about the history and having a part of it is very fulfilling. >>
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words!
