$1,585+ for this 1979 Topps Baseball "rack case". Does anyone else think "a bit too m

This 1979 rack pack case was discussed before on another thread about a possible canidate for a "group rip". At that time, with a day to go, this case had a high bid around 1000 bucks.

First off, how many rack packs to this "three box case"?

Secondly, doesn't $1585 sound a bit much for this item? image

I think the price is right, but does that look opened to you? Maybe the boxes were searched for stars on front? Dunno...

I'm a little concerned about those two wet spots on top of the case. image

3 boxes. 24 racks a box. A little over $22/pack. Maybe a little high, but with sealed cases, you pay a premium assuming there will be some packs with stars/rc's showing, that you would not normally have a chance at.
  • 1. it's not sealed

2: DUE TO THE WEIGHT AND SIZE THE SHIPPING LISTED IN THE AD IS NOT ACCURATE A FAIR AND ACCURATE AMOUNT WILL BE DETERMINED AFTER THE AUCTION IS OVER. I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO SHIP ITEMS LIKE THIS AND I AM ALWAYS FAIR ALSO INSURANCE WILL BE REQUIRED AND DETERMINED AT THE END OF THE AUCTION THANKS SO MUCN AND GOOD LUCK BIDDING.

ahem, just tell me how much the damn thing weighs and we can do the math via UPS or USPS

I can't figure out while eBay sellers don't properly fill out the categories for items like this. I always watch the pre-80 boxes and cases, but unless I would've done a search for this, I never would've seen it.

You get over 2000 mint cards still in their original packs and boxes.

How does he know that? And if you didn't get over 2,000 MINT cards would he give you your money back? image
  • I know some idiot that paid $1400 for two (2) 1979 rack boxes.

Got tons of nice raw cards, if anyone's interested.

I actually need 145 cards to finish off a set I've been working on for what seems like forever but no funds right now and yours would probably be in better condition as mine are in the EX/MT range.
  • I will say that if BBCE had a similar case and I had an extra $2000, I would buy it. So, would I be willing to risk $400 less if I had the cash and take the chance of it not being sealed? I would say yes but I am a fiend for unopened cases.

Funny thing that WAS high retail back then. I bought two 79 rack boxes around that time for $450 a box. Even as recently as 2 years ago, 79 rack boxes sold for $750 a box. I do recall back then thinking those prices were undervalued, but obviously that gap has been closed, lol..

I almost pulled the trigger in mid to late 2013 on a 75 Vending box at $1700(Now listed at $4200) and a 79 Rack Box at $1200 from Fritsch. I was irritated they went up a couple hundred over their catalog price when I got them on the phone. I also didn't want to do the work in getting a money order and mailing it. Ouch, ahh well, singles for me anyway.
