Offering on a rookie card

There are two sellers selling a card I want. Both are selling between $170-175. The value of the PSA 10 card on SMR is $105. I don't believe the card is rare enough to warrant a $70 increase. Is my best option to offer the current value and perhaps adds $20?

Would love some advice.
TIA

I wouldn't be looking at the SMR value if I were you. I'd see what the card has actually sold for recently and base my offer on that.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Yeah, SMR prices are generally a bunch of crap.

I guess I can fly with that. After searching the last several auctions, the only one that sold went for $102.50.

    Thanks

I have a card that always sell anywhere from $450-550, and SMR says the value is something like $200. Ever since I saw that, I don't even look at SMR anymore.

Do you happen to know where I can find the values PSA uses for card submittals? I thought they used SMR for that.

The value for submittals is determined by the submitter. Now if you try to sub a NM-MT Mantle in the under $100 category, they're going to take issue with that. The best single pricing benchmark is VCP. Their values aren't gospal but they're pretty good for most cards. If you're buying the card on eBay, VCP is the best guide IMO.

I always try and offer what the last few sales on ebay have averaged. Sometimes the seller will take it, sometimes not and sometimes counteroffer. From a sellers standpoint, I can tell you now that if I have something up for $175 that averages $100 or so, that I would definitely consider a $120 offer.

  • I would recommend that you subscribe to Vintage Card Prices (VCP).

    http://www.vintagecardprices.com/

For a few dollars a month, you can see previous sales for almost any graded card broken down by grader and grade. You'll quickly make back your subscription fee by making smarter purchases.

SMR values are rarely updated, so they don't reflect the current market value of many cards. As others have pointed out, there are examples where the SMR price is far off base.

eBay completed sales works OK, but only goes back for a short amount of time. VCP goes back several years.

I thought VCP only tracked graded cards? If you're trying to figure out value BEFORE you submit, how would that help?? I'm asking because it does bring up a point I've always wondered when it comes to values for submitting cards.

Suppose I have a Henderson rookie I want to sub. With raw ebay sales of $25 bucks, psa 8 sales at $60+, psa 9 sales at 300+, and psa 10 sales near $10K, what is the value? Am I expected to "pre-grade" the card myself?? Would a Henderson rookie fall in the "under $100" category?? I think it should.

    Thoughts?

    Yes, good question.

If I want to submit rookie cards that I own that I think MIGHT be gem-mint, what would I base it on? If SMR is showing $105 for PSA 10, can I still submit it for an under $100 value submittal? They need to update the SMR if they are going to keep it on the PSA site.

For the question of value when sending it in to PSA, I would base it on recent sales on ebay for raw cards, or just what it is worth to you personally. That is a tough call. I always thought the value you put on your cards sent to psa was more for insurance purposes. PSA doesn't determine your grade on your perceived value, since we are not professional graders. I have sent in many cards under bulk services that I valued under 100, but once graded they are worth much more than 100.

This is with common sense in mind. Like mentioned by another member, don't send in a 52 Topps Mantle and say it is worth 50 bucks. If the card in raw condition is clearly worth a lot more than 100 or 500 than it should be subbed appropriately. If it is a condition sensitive card like the Henderson, I think it can be subbed at whatever level you are comfortable with.

I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.

Would you consider a $100 offer for an item that sells for $100 or so?

You can go on this board and openly ask a fellow member for pricing on one card.
Make sure you give grade needed. player, manuf and if any qualifiers.

I recently bought a 73 hi# Yankee common psa 9. Got it for $350 and they can hit $400 or a tad higher on ebay.
    SMR had it at $15

VCP is the only way 2 go.
