cards with tape stains

Is there any positive to getting old cards with tape stains graded??? I know someone who has some early 50's but they all have tape stains.....

IMO, for the most part the answer would be no. I'd still grade any really big cards like Mantles, Aaron/Clemente/etc. rookies. Also, if there were some that might by luck be in such good shape that they could be a 9(ST), those would be good to get graded too. Best idea would be to post a pic or scan here first for more accurate recommendations.

EARLY 50's cards? ABSOLUTELY! Especially if other than the tape the cards present well. Grades themselves might not be that "good" but they would be authenticated and that brings a lot of peace of mind for potential buyers.

Now if you think the cards are going to be real low grades; PSA 1-3 for example you might not want to grade them.

Can you post a few scans? That would REALLY help.

Had the same issue today. Had the opportunity to buy several old cards, including a Terry Bradshaw Rookie, a 66 Hank Aaron, a 68 Rose, a 70 Wilt Chamberlain and a 65 Maris among others. All would grade about 7-8 EXCEPT backs all had tape stains on them. Problem was, the person selling them said something along the lines of "Well, that wont lower the value but a few dollars a card"....If only he knew. He was willing to take half Beckett, roughly $1200 for the lot. I added it up and would be lucky to pull $300-400 off of feebay, so decided to pass.

thanks for the info......the cards I've seen so far had the tape on the front, not back....and to be honest they were also kind of beat...I'm going to see if he has any others...

There is a local burger joint in San Antonio that had tables made with some old cards under the polyurethane. They look pretty good in the table tops, despite the stains and holes in them.

I think it's worth grading star cards from that era. I have a handful of cards that had tape on em, and as someone said, they'd probably grade 4-6 without the tape.
