1984 Topps Football Unopened help please

Am looking to buy some 1984 Topps Football unopened from BBCE. I cannot afford the wax box they have for sale so am looking at the other three options:

Rack Pack

Cello

Wax Pack

So if I wanted to spend $150 on one of the above with the intention of opening it what would the recommendation be? Obviously card condition would be primary concern. Any help is much appreciated.

Having bought all 3 in 1984, I'd roll the dice on the rack myself. I don't know anything about sequencing however.

Racks are notoriously off center that year. Cello is your best bet for high grade.

Is that the reason the price per card is more when buying cello compared to racks?

Definitely agree about the racks from this particular issue and centering problems but I personally have had much better luck with '84 wax over cello (and in general).

Here's a rack box me and a couple others ripped a couple weeks ago if you want to check out the O/C problems. If I didn't do it right the rip starts on page 4.

Cellos are notorious for bad corners, no??

Racks in general are the better way to go, I've only gotten cellos boxes for '84 football though but mostly I leave things sealed too. So I'd try a sample of both rack and cello and tell us what you experience.

Likely. I have ripped all three forms from 1984 and I personally have had the best luck with cellos. For some reason the rack boxes I broke always had o/c cards. Corners were sharp, but the centering was all over the place. The wax boxes I opened had some high grade cards, but you tend to loose two cards to wax and gum issues. The cellos gave me the best bang for the buck. The cello wraps were looser beginning in 1980-1988 and so corners tend to come out clean (not the tight wrap cello issues that plague the 1970's items).

This was my personal experience. Hope this helps.

If for ripping, I'd just buy an assortment of each.

    Good Luck.

84 cellos are wrapped loose so my experience is that the cards are in better shape then other cello years.

  • Ive had great success with the quality of cards Ive pulled from wax, despite the gum stain card.

Great corners and centering through out the wax boxes Ive opened. Still sitting on to Unopened boxes.

Here are a few from those wax rips.
