If you had $3000 for one card, what would you spend it on?

<rubs chin>

1938 DiMaggio PSA 5 (? - highest grade I could get)

or...

1963 Topps Pete Rose PSA 8

    A 1951 Bowman Willie Mays PSA 6 or a 1952 Topps Mays PSA 7.
Maybe not a PSA 7, because that's a little out of reach, but a decently centered SGC 84.

t206 Christy Mathewson, portrait or black cap version. Highest grade I could get.

    Between those 2 the Rose...

Personally, I'd probably chase a 52T Mantle low grade...the holy grail

I wouldn't spend that much on one card.

But for the sake of the thread, I'd probably get something in a babe Ruth or Mickey mantle.

I'd go for the best looking low grade '52 Mantle that I could find.

Best 1968 Clemente 3-D I could find. Runner up would be 1948 Leaf Paige.

If non-sports is allowed, PSA 7.5/8 Ratz Crackers or PSA 9 Band-Ache white back...if sports, PSA 9 Seaver rookie.
  • Between those two choices, I would go after the Rose.

since you asked today.....well, yesterday......a '61 Fleer Wilt the Stilt RC in a dead centered PSA 8 would rock my world.

but ask me again tomorrow. image

Highest Namath rc I could find or J.Brown 8/8.5 but thats cause
I dont collect baseball.I would think a Ryanc rc high grade would not be
    a bad choice either.

+1 (and I think you could get better than an 8 in a non-Probstein auction for $3000)

This is morbid but...Cards increase in value on 3 major events...1) Player is performing well at their sport 2) Retire/HOF election 3) Die...Thus I would go with the highest graded...1954 Aaron, 1965 Namath, 1951/1952 Mays, and long shot Yogi Berra....I don't collect basketball or their could be others. Good Luck and most important have fun!!

Between the 2 options, I'd go with Rose. His rookie card is very popular and would be a breeze to resell if you ever needed to.

Not in terms of investment, but fun to own, in no particular order, some of them I'd consider would be:

    8 to 8.5 1954 Topps Gordie Howe
6.5 to 7 1966 Topps Bobby Orr (7 is a stretch at that price but it can be done)
highest grade affordable of Georges Vezina, Eddie Shore, or Howie Morenz RC's
    1954 Kaline
best 8.5 1979 OPC Gretzky I could find that had a possible chance of a half grade bump

High grade 84 star Jordan # 101. It has the most potential upside if psa someday starts grading them

At the moment, probably a PSA 9 Seaver RC, though it would probably take a bit more than $3k.
  • ToneDToneD Posts: 281 ✭✭✭
Out of those two I would go with the DiMaggio. I'm a believer in overall rarity vs condition rarity.

    1. Best eye appeal 52 Topps Mantle
    2. PSA 7 57 Topps Bill Russell RC
    3. PSA 7.5 65 Topps Namath
    4. Mid grade eye appeal T206 Cobb
    5. Mid grade eye appeal 1933 Ruth

Highest grade 1969 Topps Kareem rookie, they rarely ever surface for sale in PSA 8 or above.

With $3K, I'd get a PSA 5 1951 Bowman Willie Mays and a PSA 4/5 1939 Play Ball Ted Williams.

They've been the Top-2 items on my want list for over 2 years!
