Has Anyone had Luck Bumping 8.5s?

I'm not talking about cracking and resubbing but rather through reviews. I have a handful of 8.5s that have a big $ delta vs a straight 8, so I don't want to risk cracking them. However, I wonder how open the graders are to bumping an 8.5 to a 9. On one hand they bump 8s to 9s all the time. On the other hand, they might view the 8.5 as already getting the benefit of the doubt that it's a nicer card than an 8 but not nice enough for a 9. I have some free reviews from the registry benefit program and I'm trying to decide if I should sub for review 8.5s to bump to 9 or if I'm better off subbing 9s in the hopes of bumping to a 10.

Thanks.

If you're good at grading cards and look at a bunch of 8.5 grade cards you'll find cards that range from low-end to high-end for the grade. If you get the legitimate high-end cards reviewed you'll do well on average getting them bumped. If you submit low-end cards or can't/don't want to see the defects in your cards then you'll do very poorly on getting cards bumped.
  • I've seen an 8.5 bump to a 7

I have, several times. If you send in 10 reviews, all high end 8.5s, I bet you'll get at least three bumps. In my experience, they don't let an entire review order go with zero bumps.

Thanks for your feedback everyone. I'll give some of the high end 8.5s a try and see how it goes. Worst case, I'm out the shipping fees.
  • Zero luck on that front, but my test group is small, and was littered with a bunch of 8's looking for bumps. If you provide only 8.5's in the sub, you should have better luck.

    that's been my experience also.
Work hard and you will succeed!!
  • This actually is a fantastic qustion image If an 8.5 or any .5 actually bumps that would mean a double bump proving the original grade wasn't even close.

I always include a couple of low end for the grade cards and put them at the beginning of a review sub -- the ugly betty strategy.

  • In everybody's experience, is it easier to bump an 8.5 to a 9... or an 8 to an 8.5?

Funny this thread would come up. I am ecstatic because I finally finally got my 1964 Pete Rose bumped from 8.5 to 9. Grades were posted this am it was my 3rd attempt on that card and the persistence paid off. I thought it was closer to a 10 than 8.5.

And to answer the OP's original question, I have done a lot of reviews and had decent success but especially with 8.5 to 9

I have gotten 5 bumps and 4 were from 8.5 to 9, including the Rose. Also had a Jeter 1993 SP get bumped from 8.5 to 9.
