4 Sharp Corners - funny or not so funny

With their latest 20% off of $30, I went out to there site to pick up a couple of cards I was waiting to get when they were priced right.
What do my wondering eyes see but the "ebay" prices on most of the cards I was watching went up(same exact cards too).
So with the discount they are actually higher then they were last week.

Saw that too. I'm on a Maddux PSA 10 kick, and a couple of weeks ago I wrote down their prices just so I could plan out my purchases. So I go to take advantage of their "sale" and the prices are higher than what I wrote down.

Toys R Us just did this with Lego sets. Huge displays all over, buy one, get one 50% off. Look them up on amazon and find out they have raised the prices of everything to almost 50% OVER LIST. One kit that listed for 24.99,I bought on Amazon for 14.99. Toys R Us wanted 34.99. If you bought two, the second one was at 17.50. The really sad thing is that people fall for this crap all over.

I think most retail outlets do this because their marketing research shows that most consumers are total

    DING!

Typically retail stores will temporarily increase prices around September/October, give the impression of massive discounts through the holidays, and then blowout remaining inventory beginning of the next year to make way for the 'new and improved' version.

Funny thing is, that process qualifies as consumer protection.

Its just good marketing by 4SC. They know most consumers and collectors are suckers.

And theres one born every minute in the hobby.

Their marketing department likely figure these people aren't to smart in the first place, Why not sucker them twice.

    And so its confirmed.

Modern stuff? Should have went for the 9's, their cheaper yet and 10's on any given day.

Don't 4SC PSA 10's come with an asterisk next to them?

All I am saying is now you have a $0.50 card in a plastic holder. I admit I get certain ones because they are easier to display.

It's a 50 cent card if your only plan is to sell it on eBay tomorrow. I sure wish my dad would have had the option to holder some of those 1 cent cards when he was a kid. Wouldn't have seemed smart at the time, but years later a PSA 10 1956 card sure would have been worth it. I don't mind spending the $5.75 to get some perfect future Hall of Fame cards into a slab.

I have always thought that some of the PSA 10s on their site looked more like 8's and 9s. Is there a grading company that grades PSA graded cards? haha

i bought a 1986 topps traded Canseco PSA 10 from them. The card is very off center and has some whitening around the top. I believe i have a PSA 6 graded PSA 10

I am a bit confused over the animosity towards 4SC. They aren't doing anything every other retailer does; trying to get the most money for their product.

I don't see how anyone is a "sucker" if they buy a card they can't find elsewhere. If it's over graded, send it back or don't buy it in the first place if it has obvious problems, and then cry about it.

THAT is the real problem, if you do in fact buy over graded items and don't return them, you are guilty of supporting the very problem you are unhappy with.

I have purchased a few items from them, none look over graded although a couple were a bit over priced, but that was my choice, and some others were actually bargains.

Unlike some sellers who relist their items literally HUNDREDS of times at the same ridiculous price, 4SC usually will lower their price on an item if it doesn't sell.

This ^. I've bought a ton of PSA 10's from them since I started working on my set, and before I purchase a card, I always look very carefully at the card i'm about to buy to make sure it's something i'll be happy with. I do think they should provide a scan of the back, which they don't. There have been cards that they've listed in the past that I really needed, but decided to pass it by because either there was centering issues or print dots in the team banner etc. These are ten's i'm referring to. I just tell myself that eventually, a better copy will come along. This isn't 4SC's fault because they didn't grade the cards. Like joebanzi mentioned also, prices do drop...they do have a couple cards listed as we speak that i'm waiting for this to happen. And it usually happens fairly quickly. Also nice purchases Paul lots of nice cards there.

Speaking only for myself, and to each his own, but since i've been playing the registry game I too haven't noticed much of a difference between a 9 or 10. Me personally, i collect 10's. It's just what I like. I wouldn't begrudge anyone else for doing it either. Maybe Paul didn't want 9's. I also believe that there is a competition with the registry, but that's not why I collect. I have no sets listed. I do it for the thrill of the chase and the feeling of accomplishment and owning a beautiful set. It's true 10's are way more expensive, but I can't conquer rome in a day so however long it takes to complete a set in the 10 holder, is fine. It's a lifelong hobby and passion.

By doing frequent massive PSA submissions they slow down the process for everyone else
trying to get their cards graded.

They've virtually killed the PSA 10 market on eBAY for 1986-1991 Topps cards by flooding it with
product and consistently under-cutting everyone else. This is great for buyers, but not so much for
anyone else trying to sell PSA 10s for a decent return.

I won't even discuss the issue of their graded card results. Those that have eyes can see.

4SC is the Wal-Mart of graded cards. Some people love them but I'm not one of them.

So its okay for YOU to submit cards for the sole purpose of profit, but not them?

1986-1991 cards? Are you for real thinking these cards were rare? And not overly hyped and priced in the first place?

This in a hobby, not an investment vehicle that owes you a "decent return"

They've virtually killed the PSA 10 market on eBAY for 1986-1991 Topps cards by flooding it with
product and consistently under-cutting everyone else. This is great for buyers, but not so much for
anyone else trying to sell PSA 10s for a decent return.

I won't even discuss the issue of their graded card results. Those that have eyes can see.

4SC is the Wal-Mart of graded cards. Some people love them but I'm not one of them. >>

They are not the only big submitter out there, that complaint is to me invalid.

The market was killed from 1986-1991 when card companies mass produced their product, it never had value, just a temporary spike in demand, again not 4SC's fault.

Same as point number 1 plenty of large submitters seem to have better luck with their grades, if you believe this is true it's PSA's fault for being "inconsistent".

I never liked Wal-Mart, but when their prices are 20-30% lower on food and I am unemployed, I am thankful for the savings.

Sounds like you simply cannot compete with them, yes that sucks, but I just went through 15,000 cards I collected in the late 80's and early 90's and found about 50 that were worth enough to send in for grading, and that's if they get 10's. That's sucks as well, just the way it is.

Hate them all you want, I have been happy with the cards I have purchased from them, and will continue to do so.

    << <i>Spoken like a true Registry person

    Label first

card second (or does it even matter if theres a card in the slab?) >>

I also am sick and tired of the bashing of "Registry" people. I DARE you to look at my set and tell me I am buying the label and not the card. Harmon Killebrew Master set, it's the number one set. You will notice ALL my slabs contain cards.

In fact I have had SEVERAL people on the boards who's opinions I respect say that many of my cards are under graded.

This seems to be pretty common on the boards to take shots at us "Registry" collectors because we enjoy that form of collecting.

Why don't you tell me what you collect and I can tell you how stupid you are?

<< <i>So its okay for YOU to submit cards for the sole purpose of profit, but not them?

1986-1991 cards? Are you for real thinking these cards were rare? And not overly hyped and priced in the first place?
This in a hobby, not an investment vehicle that owes you a "decent return" >>

The poster asked about animosity and thus I was explaining my personal animosity towards them.
    Your mileage may vary.

Feel free to shop at the Wal-Mart of graded cards any time you want. Just be aware that they and
other high-volume sellers of graded cards are are crowding out the smaller sellers by rock-bottom
pricing on many PSA 10 cards.

No it's not a hobby for 4SC, far from it.

I just collect what I like. I collect lots of different things. I only started collecting PSA graded cards a year or two ago, and as I stated above, I ALWAYS CHECK THE CARD VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE PURCHASING, TO MAKE SURE IT'S SOMETHING I'M GOING TO BE HAPPY WITH. How is that buying the holder, and not the card? I also have a lot of unopened in my collection, but that isn't my main focus right now...It seems like ever since I joined these boards back in March, that people that work on high-grade sets, or "registry people" really get no respect around here. To me buying the holder and not the card would mean to just purchase the first card you ever see in whatever grade you want without even looking it over or checking things out. Personally, that isn't how I do things, but to each his own. I would never belittle someone for what they collect.
I'm starting to wonder if this is the place for me or not..lol

This forum is for graded card collectors and some are very hard-core about their
    graded card preferences.

If you want to have excellent conversations with other collectors about cards (graded or not),
NET54 is a great place to hang out and I highly suggest that you check it out.

    DING!

Typically retail stores will temporarily increase prices around September/October, give the impression of massive discounts through the holidays, and then blowout remaining inventory beginning of the next year to make way for the 'new and improved' version.

Funny thing is, that process qualifies as consumer protection. >>

"It's a 50 cent card if your only plan is to sell it on eBay tomorrow. "

A big difference being that there was no option for protecting cards back in the day. If there had been grading services and card protectors back then instead of putting the cards in my bike spokes they would have
went straight into protective sleeves. PSA 10's and mint cards would be much easier to obtain today and they would be much cheaper (my guess based on supply and demand). My point I guess is that today everyone protects their cards so I don't see
a 50 cent card of today commanding a premium 50 years from now just based on condition.

I've bought numerous times from 4SC, always had great service, and yes their prices are consistently low. The people feeding negative attention their way I don't get. Are you suggesting if you were in their shoes, and had their resources, you wouldn't grade, list, and sell that many cards? How is offering their cards at the best prices bad for the hobby? Yes, it's bad for other sellers, but wouldn't the opportunity then lie with you in trying to find other markets to expand into?

I've bought a few cards from 4SC. No problems on this end. Some might say slightly slow shipping but waiting an extra day or two wasn't, and won't kill me.

The only complaint is when they can't find a card they advertise or list, they just give a refund and never tell you, call you, email you, message you, or explain what happened (prolly cause the don't know). They have always delivered in a reasonable amount of time and have bargains if you look hard enough. It always surprises me when someone complains about paying an extra dollar or two for a $50 card, I mean aren't all cards subjective and unique in their condition and printing state anyway. My Kellogg's HOF hitter's collection is at about 80%, almost all purchased from 4SC. There pricing has gone up a bit in the last year or so, but I'm guessing this is a reflection of our hobby state.

    Corncobb,

I'm not sure why you decided to bash my lot of cards I bought from 4SC's but it wasn't nice. Do you think I hang out at WalMart buying cards? Well I do to some degree. I have bought countless boxes of cards, and for your information, here is one of my "Modern Submissions":

Now the first 54 cards graded were a friend of mine that piggybacked on this sub. My Moderns start with the crazy run of PSA 10's...those are the ones that I graded and sent in to PSA MYSELF! I have an eye and no what to look for. Now I bought these cards from 4SC because the price was $4.24 & $5.09. Now I have a sub into PSA right now. It was delivered on 12/02/2013, but as of this writing, it still isn't logged in. Not to mention I will have to wait >50 business days to have it graded, plus 2 sets of Holidays, so it will be March before I see it if I'm lucky. So, if these particular cards I bought from 4SC's is what I LIKE TO COLLECT, then what gives you the right to bash them?

Another thing. I collect 1968 Topps and some other sets that I like. I'm also completing a "Homemade" set of 1982 Donruss M*A*S*H cards. You can click here to see the set Now these are all made by me, and none of them will be bought, other then I have to buy boxes of original cards and search them myself. I will complete that set in 100% PSA 10, because that is what I want to do, to see if it can be done, and I do not care the cost or the time. It will be done. I also do not care what others think, although 100% of the comments have been positive.

Not everyone can collect 1952 Topps. Not everyone can afford 1952 Topps. This "Registry game" is for each individual to decide how they want to collect.

    Stop pissing in my soup!

    Paul.

    Later, Paul.

Well said but I don't think you need to defend yourself. I don't think anybody needs to defend any honest collecting habits. To change topics slightly those PSA 10s that 4SC sells for $5 or lower, do we think they are cards they've had for a while and have decided to take a loss on or are they still making a profit at those prices?

I find it rather quizzical how some will go out of their way to post on the message board of a company they openly lambaste, even after being banned. If I didn't care or have any respect for a particular company, I certainly wouldn't linger around and post just to unfairly criticize what another person chooses to collect, modern or otherwise. That's just poor form, imo.

I doubt that they are making a profit on those cards, or if they are, not very much. I don't know what kind of deal they are getting from PSA on bulk submissions, but even at $2.50-3.00 per card + overhead there's little or no profit there.
They are simply getting rid of inventory that is just sitting taking up space, that costs money as well.
