Whatever you do, don't ask George Brett for an autograph

    Seems like this Farrens guy is not only a collector and sounds like he has harassed Brett on more than a few occasions. Although it is true Brett needs to watch what he says with todays technology. I can see why Brett would be annoyed.

    There are many good and bad stories about Brett. I met a couple guys 5 years ago in Cooperstown that got Brett to sign a bunch of stuff for them at the golf course. They said he was really nice. He does seem like a moody guy so its all probably timing with him.

    There was a time you could mail to Brett Bros and get your items signed with a donation. George stopped signing through his charity because some dirtbag threatened to sue Brett because he didnt like something about the autograph he got back.

    This reminds me of the Gary Carter video where the guy uses his kids to get photos signed at a show. I think it kind of backfired on the guy recording the incident. Here is that video...

    Kudos to Gary Carter(RIP), I think he handled that very well considering the situation. When I watch a video such as that and someone starts recording prior to an encounter, it seems they are looking to provoke someone. Gary was being very cordial and engaging his fans, yet someone used a child in an inflammatory tactic to spoil things. When I make it famous I will be the next Howard Hughes and live secluded from the world with 50 of the most beautiful women you set your eyes on!

    Don't blame George Brett either.

    And the Gary Carter thing...geez what a jerk that guy was.

    I have no idea what is wrong with some of these people. If a guy doesn't want to autograph something or has a policy or whatever, so be it. Dudes prerogative and NO ONE should be harassed like that. Gary Carter was a hard nosed player, a bright guy, and a decent person on the field. It seems like at the show he was being a cool guy too.

    And that Brett video of him crapping his pants...I was dying watching that.

    I take my daughter to Rays games, and we often go when the gates open because she has a Rays t-shirt that she gets autographs on, and we can get a good spot by the dugout if we get there early. The absolute worst part of the experience is the adults who think they are entitled to autographs. A guy right beside me called Evan Longoria every name in the book because Evan was going along signing for kids and skipped over this guy's bat. I tell my daughter to make sure you thank every player, because at some point I wouldn't blame them for stopping the practice altogether. Matt Moore was so nice that he thanked my daughter for asking to have her picture taken with him. But then 60 seconds later some idiot seller will make it not worth it if he doesn't get his rookie card signed.

    The title of this thread should be "whatever you do, don't ask George Brett for an autograph 35 times." I'm sure if you approach the man once or twice
    he'd accommodate you.

    I agree. The title of this thread is misleading. This video is completely taken out of context, and who would assume this was his typical reaction to a friendly fan seeking an autograph. Truth be told - I'm a Brett fan and have been since I was a child. I caught a rare illness (Guillain-Barre) when I was two years old. My Grandmother, a life-long Royals fan wrote Brett, telling him about my situation. Brett sent an autographed picture and a personalized get-well card to my hospital room. I was obviously too young at the time to understand how cool this was, but I still have the get-well card - and I will never forget the gesture. I would never condone threatening someone like this, but without knowing the full story - who knows how weird this guy has gotten with GB. Despite any internet videos George Brett is a hero in my book.

    Co-sign. I was a spring training bat boy when I was a kid, and when the Royals came to town he was very nice to me and signed a couple of cards. On the exact same day, Bo Jackson was pretty rude, even though I was the only person around.

    Something to keep in mind as well, this Brandon Farrens runs a business selling autographs. Signing here and there for people is one thing, but when others are intruding on your personal time in the interest of making a profit I'm sure it can be frustrating.

    also with carter those kids never saw him play what were they 7? he should have personlized the pictures to the kids so they would not be resold as easy. if they were true fans the father should have gotten their picture taken with carter and the cards he was signing now thats a memory.

    sometimes i dont know how players keep their cool.

    i once asked emmitt smith for an auto but he said i only sign for kids i appreciated that and never bothered him again

    I, too, appreciate that. What makes me sick is when those same greaseball adults I mentioned before get kids to get the autographs for them.

    Imagine walking through the streets and people constantly asking your for $20... that's what he has to deal with on a daily basis. Now imagine someone like Tiger Woods constantly being asked for about $850, because that happens all day every day.

    How would any human being be able to tolerate that without going off on a select few, I don't care if you're a millionaire or not.. I hate autograph hounds... they're just another ugly facet to this great hobby. That's why I really don't collect autos. When I meet a celebrity or sports figure, I just talk to them, thank them, and enjoy the moment. I don't scramble for the nearest marker so they can sign something.

    Sorry your kid did not get a picture with Gary Carter, but imagine if everyone wanted to do that. He is trying to sign everyone's stuff and still chat it up too. Did not need to be a jerk about it though.

    I've been collecting autographs for years but it has slowed down in recent years. So I know that some people are "easy" and others "tough" and it's part of the game but this guy went way overboard for sure and needs to use common manners. I wish Brett would have just ignored the guy like he didn't exist. I think that's worse than anything. As for the whole just signing for kids thing, I think it's not always the right approach. I believe some people say that to every adult but would they then sign for a kid or would there be another excuse? For example, I've heard of ballplayers saying they don't sign at the hotel but then at the stadium, they either aren't accessible or don't sign there either. And if the player truly does sign for kids only, doesn't that encourage people to use kids to get them? Why not personalize and make sure the personalization and autograph overlap? What about retired players who kids don't know? I've been at signings with older players and I see kids who have no idea who the person is. So then the kid who has no idea why they even want an autograph should get one over someone who actually knows the person and wants to meet them?

    Also, anyone who has flown and dealt with airports know how aggravating that experience is and then to have this total a-hole stalk you. Man I wish we lived in a day when street justice could be met.

    BTW: What a wonderfully nice and classy guy Carter was. That guy could not have been more of a jerk.

    I chased autographs for a few years and it was actually fun. My best friend and I used to take a day off of work
    and make a day of it. We were hounds I guess but we never were jerks like that..

    I can honestly say I have never asked for an autograph. The ones I have are from signings and ebay.

    However threatening to shoot/kill someone can be considered a "terroristic threat" at least here in Minnesota and can be a felony under certain circumstances.

    I can also never understand why either party has to be rude. Famous people get too much attention in this country, they should realize that is part of the cost of fame.

    Can you imagine Harmon Killebrew, Brooks Robinson or Stan Musial behaving this way?

    Shame on you George!
