Do you write "FRAGILE" on your packages?

Comments

  • I don't. Someone who worked for UPS in college told me that they intentionally tried to damage boxes marked fragile. When shipping cards, I am also afraid that a high insured value plus fragile on the package make it more likely to get stolen.

I still think its best to put fragile on the package. If not then they are more likely to throw your packages into bins, etc.

Did you read the article? Popular Mechanics' experiment says the opposite is true, although their sample size was very small.
  • I might do it if the item I am sending is considered to be a major award.

reverse psychology seems to work. every now and then we'd include a package for the UPS pick-up guy with the words "Kick Me" written in black marker on top.

always got a laugh and then covered with a sticker. image

You should specify, the study mentioned in the article only applies to UPS, not the USPS.

Truth. Have been told the exact same thing multiple times from insiders, thus I have always made it a point to abstain. Have never once had a mishap in transit as a result. I'm sure my time is coming, but it will never be a "I've got your fragile right here" scenario.

It applies to USPS, UPS, and FedEx. The link to the Popular Mechanics experiment is at the bottom of the Lifehacker article.

Damn you people! That's what I get for arriving late to the thread.

I was gonna say, "only if I'm sending a package to Italy"
  • You don't write fragile on the package for the shipping service. You put it for the buyer of your cards. If the package is damaged, and you didn't write fragile on it, the buyer is more likely to blame you. If you wrote fragile, they'll blame the shipping service.

    Christmas Story reference killed me.

As for Fragile, I'm not a seller so I don't ship anything, but as a buyer I don't even like my box referencing baseball cards in any way, on the return address. That's why I love buying from board members. BBCE is the one exception.

I kinda feel like the Fragile reference or Baseball Cards in return address, may just as well be labeled Valuable Please Take Me.

I've never had an issue though so I'm sure it's my own paranoia, but temptation makes people do crazy things. Whether its theft or kicking a fragile box.

But I did appreciate the comment about the Fragile label releasing you from some some liability, but at the end of the day, the buyer may fuss either way.

I usually write “Drugs from Columbia” on the package. I get special handling from the Post office.
