2013 Vatican Ooops!

With the summer I'd lost track of the new pope's medal issues and came across this article on the 'net. Guess there's not spell check program for die engravers!

Vatican Misspells Jesus’ Name on Papal Medal

Someone is going to be saying a “mea culpa.”

A medal issued by the Vatican commemorating Pope Francis’ first year as the Bishop of Rome included a rather glaring spelling error, a typo of Biblical proportions.

Engraved with the Latin phrase that the pope says inspired him to join the priesthood as a young man, Italy’s state mint misspelled the name of Jesus, calling the son of God Lesus instead.

The medals, of which 6,000 were pressed in silver and bronze and another 200 in gold, have now been recalled. The design included a portrait of Pope Francis on the obverse and on the reverse a work by the artist Mariangela Crisciotti.

The medals were to go on sale Tuesday and include the Latin inscription: “Vidit ergo Jesus publicanum et quia miserando atque eligendo vidit, ait illi sequere me,” according to the Vatican press office.

Mistakenly, however, the word “Lesus” was printed instead.

The phrase it the pope’s motto. It means, “Jesus, therefore, saw the publican, and because he saw by having mercy and by choosing, He said to him, ‘Follow me.’”

I read about that the other day. How embarrassing!

Here's the obverse also, for reference:

Hadn't seen the obverse, thanks Joe. I came across another report that they actually sold 4 of these before they were recalled. It'll be interesting to see what they fetch as errors.

4 in the public domain with so many vatican issue collectors out there?
certainly, time will only increase the value.

There is a mere handful on Ebay right now.

Actually, the medals are usually slow to come out after issue and there are relatively many more on ebay than I've seen for the current year than in the past. They're going for BIG prices so I'm marking time to make a purchase for my annual set since I think there'll be more along and demand will ease (I hope!) Obviously the report of just 4 being sold was not correct.

I think they pulled them then resold them or someone knows something like the folks that were supposed to destroy them did not etc...

I think I had read somewhere that the medals were on sale for two days before they were pulled, so an ample number would have been released during that time.

I hope so. I got to thinking that it would be hard for anyone at the Vatican to melt or deface/destroy anything with a Pope on it. So they may have sent them back to the mint, the Italian mint and are going out the back door. I hope not, but you never know..

Oy. Of all places to have a "typo", the first letter of the Savior's name.

That can't be good for an engraver's career.

How could you make a mistake like that? I don't mean physically (I am guessing they reversed the J) but I mean in the not catching it beforehand sense.

A fascinating story is unfolding. I have tracked about 23 sales on Ebay for Silver, Bronze and Gold versions.. About 9 Silver, 10 Bronze and 2 gold have sold. Also 2 three medal sets called Tritticos. The Silver one retail at about 100 Euros, not sure about the others. My Friend in Italy who works around the Vatican shared this with me... his English is not the greatest:

i do not know how old you are
but being a son and a brother of two journalist
i can tell you for sure that you should not believe to what they say or write...
    they were all balooneys
    4 pieces
    i guess who invented that
they were available for sale normally
so a few more than four pieces were sold in the three vatican bookstores
then they were withdrawn for the error
then they called me i was on a waiting list
    they were again on display
    i went bought it
    with others
    40 or more
still less than the total struck pieces
and they were withdrawn again for the second and last time
and were not available any longer...

The engraver will be taken before the Holy Office and will be put to the question.
