1986 Topps Baseball

I'm getting ready to move from Pasadena, CA to Chicago at the end of the month and found myself feeling bummed today at the thought of missing the National by a few weeks, so I went to a card shop nearby to pick up some stuff. I found a few boxes of 86 baseball for a good price, so I picked them up and ripped them both. I forgot how nice of a set this is. Even though it was highly overproduced, it's a beautiful card with some great pictures. Too bad there weren't any really good RC's in it, or it may have been a more popular.

Anyone collect this year? I'm thinking about submitting some of the nicer singles I pulled.

1986 was the first year I bought packs en masse. I've always liked the set aesthetically, though I'm not working on it.

It's definitely the most popular post-1983 Topps set on the registry.

My favorite 80s and my first year collecting. Love it. Have about 3000 cards. Ungradeable but awesome.

That was the first year my factory set went straight to 9 pockets and binder so I have a really nice nrmt-mt set. Also one of the first wax and cello boxes I bought last year.....

Very nice looking set with tons of HOF's and semi stars

Probably my favorite 80's sets. I have always loosely considered doing a PSA 10 set, but I just can't imagine it ever having any value.

One day I'll probably buy a case, or a number of sealed boxes and put together a nice raw set.

There are some impossible PSA 10's in this set that would go for serious money. Speculation is a fool's game but I don't think you'd ever have to worry about losing money doing this set. Of course, I also don't think anyone would be able to do it on self submissions.

With the half black border it would have to have some serious value.

Was there a ton of this stuff produced? It doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of unopened out there, but I could be looking in the wrong place.

There's still plenty out there. More than 82/83, less than 88/89.

I never know if '86 is junk or not. I know I like it and wish it were available like '87 product, but it's not. There are no rookies in that topps box and the cards are always in terrible condition. That hurts value quite a bit. I don't think it would be in the junk discussion without that.

I know 85 isn't junk and 87 is, so this is the tweener.

There were production increases each year for Topps in the 1980s. Obviously, the amount changed drastically depending on which year we're talking about. I think the 1980s for Topps can be broken down into 4 groups -- 1981-83, 1984-86, 1987, 1988-1989. None of these groups should be considered rare. Even the difference between 1979-80 and 1981 is dramatic. As one would imagine, it increases exponentially the further you go.

I busted a rack case this week and tore into a box. Some very glossy cards. However the Sandberg and Brett's were OC. I've got a Ryan, Rose, and Ripken with 10 potential.

Its gained some interest in recent years as a tough set to get in high grade, but the lack of RC's makes it unpopular.

There used to be a guy on the board (ajetfan) that collected this set. I noticed several of his sets are now retired. Not sure whatever happened to him.

I'm not sure that anyone is actively collecting this set on the registry.

I don't see any retired sets on the registry. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Inactive and consigned with mint state rather than retired.

These are tough cards. I have personally submitted probably 20 and never gotten a 10. I have opened several rack boxes and pulled quite a few cards including commons - but am now afraid to submit them as most 9s are a losing proposition.

What part of Chicago are you moving to?
