Ahh yes, a truly great meltdown. If audio existed of it, there would be little else ever played on talk radio, even to this day.

I had heard about the Brett incident, but I never knew the story as it was before my time. Interesting stuff.

I'd rather be remembered for that outburst and subsequent victory than being sidelined due to 'roids..

edited for clarification: 'roids as in a painful tushy condition, not steroids.

much like his beloved awful franchise, the butt of every joke.
  • The narrative is that Brett would have slugged the ump but if you watch the video Brett gets right to him and could have smacked him. What's impressive is the ump completely stands his ground, doesn't even flinch and just swats at Brett.

    Love that clip.
  • I was at the game. Should have saved the ticket stub though.

Yes, George Brett Cheated. No different than taking PED'S.

    Cheating is Cheating.

Brett's eyes during the pine tar incident always reminded me of Ralph Kramden yelling "You! Are a Blabber-Mouth!!!" George was also shouting a word that started with B

  • Help me understand how pine tar going 8 more inches up the bat helped him hit that home run. I don't see any parallel to PED use.

I watched that game live since I live in NJ, and I could not believe how ballistic Brett went.

Lord only knows how many games he would gotten suspended for that, but as someone else said, the umpire stood his ground.

The continuation of the game was broadcast on WPIX-TV Channel 11 as "The Search for the Lonesome Pine!"

Kmart back then had Brett pine tar bats. I was lucky to get one and still have it!

I was 13. Remember it well. I was thinking even at my age then I wouldn't cut that kind of fit. Like George, chill man.
Brett was a player I truly despised growing up watching baseball. From 1980 - on. Gained a much better appreciation for him after he retired and as I got older. He and Mike Schmidt were as good as it gets for Third Basemen in the modern era.

Honestly can't remember but think I bought mine at the stadium.

edited to add: it's a mini bat

edited again to add more pics (sorry for the blur):

Not sure if anyone caught this article. Its from the bat boys point of view and how the pine tar incident might not have happened if it wasn't for what he did.
