NEWPS! Lot of four 1979 Egypt One Pound proofs.

Bought all four to get the IYC/FAO.

As an aside, I think the black stuff on the Abbasia Mint coin is residue from a dip gone wrong. Am I right or is their something else that could do that?

  • Also, Bank of Land Reform appears to have some PVC poison on the rim. It's funny what I don't see until I actually post the pics.

Well those are definitely proofs! or at least they look like mirror fields from where I'm sitting image

I think the black stuff you're talking about - assuming we're talking about the same thing - is contact marks and/or wear. IMO more similar to bag marks and 'scratches' than actual handling. Of course I could be completely wrong. image

Unfortunately I think I see the same black marks in every obverse image. On the Bank of Land Reform they're concentrated on the belly and legs of the statue. In the Education scene, they're all over the kids and their desks.
Luckily I only see one tiny black thing (might even be shadow) your beloved IYO, on the rim dentals around 10 o'clock (or maybe 9:30?). The good news is that's the coolest design of all four IMO. Can't say I've ever seen breastfeeding on a coin before image Pretty sweet newps!

Anyone else speculate what causes those black specks?

Here's an example of one that I sold a while ago which had some silvery specks ... so not quite black but similar IMO as it resembles missing metal more than anything else. Almost as if there was a lamination error going on. But there wasn't.

BTW I got this slabbed PR64DCAM by our hosts:

Here's another example, this one isn't a proof but examine her cheek bone ... to me it looks like the same kind of marks. I don't think a dip has made those.

  • We're talking about two different things, here. I'm referring to the black stains at about 1 and 3 o'clock near/on the rim of the Abbasia Mint commem. The various flecks and imperfections you're seeing are frost breaks/weak frost. It seems that in the 25 years the Abbasia Mint had been striking coins they hadn't quite figures out how to get the icy frosting we're used to seeing on so many proofs. Either that, or as I suspect, somebody who owned these before me went a bit dip crazy on them. Regardless, I feel fairly confident that they'd all go CAM, though not necessarily DCAM.

Frost break! I like that term. It makes sense and sounds official image

Oooh, a new coin I might want.... Is that Isis/Horus? That is one thing about the 1979 Year of the Child coins, there are some breastfeeding coins. I hadn't seen that one yet.

    Nice one!

edited to add: a rotten picture of my old avatar--can't find the good shot, but it's the Polish and 1971. Edited because I had a brain fart when thinking of the year. Yes, it's FAO, but not the YotC.

  • Cathy, I haven't yet been able to find any source material that suggests that either the breast feeder or the breast feedee is any specific god (or not).

That Polish coin is awesome! Somehow I missed that one before. It's on my overall list now for sure!

Edited my response above...I had a brain fart about the year on that one. Sorry I had that one wrong... image

And, what can I say, I had some ebay bucks and just bought and uncirculated version of yours image.

    Cathy

  • That would explain how I missed it. Now I'm torn... Hmmm.... maybe two Polish entries in the collection? image

See! That is how that OFEC slippery slope starts imageimageimage. This more a medal collection, but officially I call it the 'Mommy-Baby' theme, however if there is BF going on, it gets double points. There is no "one" in the One From Every Country...(I guess that was part of the other thread, but fit here too image )
