German City-view Thalers

Anybody have more info on these? Is Davenport the main reference work or are there any others? Are they popular in the US?

I just discovered the 1863 Frankfurt Thaler. Love it!

Here are a few more. The beauty of it is that the views have remained intact hundreds of years later in spite of the wars etc. - see thread and below - A Day in Regensburg

No friggin' idea. I never kept track, and in fact didn't keep at it for long. Moreover, given Zohar's feedback, maybe it's for the better that I stopped. image

It was a set of city view talers that cacheman posted years ago that pulled me into investigating the taler world in more detail. It was a slippery slope from there. The Krause catalog - mainly the 1701 to 1800 version - offered the background I needed. Regensburg had the highest concentration if I am not mistaken.

They are gorgeous. The only reason I'm not a taler collector is because I'm intimidated by the scope.

There is something odd about that Charles VII portrait ..... perhaps its just the proportions in relation to other talers. The portrait makes the planchett look smaller.

Wasn't doubting the authenticity in the least - just commenting on the subtle and distinctive design. Its a beauty.

I know what you mean. Compared to the others, his head is larger and takes up more of the area. The fields are smaller so it gives the sense of a smaller coin. Maybe he had a big head image

Its a rather fantastic area to get into but beware as it gets expensive in solid grades -
