My British Monarch Set

Slow day at the "office" today, so I've had all day to tinker with my camera and lighting set up. I've gone back and reimaged my British Monarch type set. The two newest additions are the William and Mary shilling and the Anne halfcrown. I have some other hole fillers that I haven't bothered to photograph, but the set is progressing nicely image A few "duplicates" in there, but only because I can't pick a favourite.

Very, very handsome set. It was a pleasure to look at. image

Makes me nostalgic for when I attempted a British monarch set in the early 1990s, on a truly tiny budget. My best coin then was a VF Stephen penny which I'd gotten lucky enough to get at a friendly price from a dealer who dealt exclusively in US coins.

Here's my King John penny, which I bought earlier this year. With the exception of the Victorian set I'm working on for my daughter, and some stray examples of other rulers in my swapstock boxes, this is pretty much my entire "British Monarch Set". Also , the old 1990s collection is long gone, alas, though I might have another go at it one day. Most of my old collection was low grade anyway, and never would have held a candle to yours, though I did have some neat pieces.

PS- that William & Mary shilling keeps catching my eye, for some reason. Despite the apparent planchet flaw, the toning on it is really attractive. Lovely piece. I like the strike on the BN George III halfpenny, too. And I'm a bit jealous of the Anne VIGO halfcrown. I always wanted an Anne VIGO or E-mintmarked coin back then, but never had one. (In the late 1990s, after I broke up that set, I did have a 1714 guinea for a little while.)

Indeed, the W&M shilling popped out at me right away while I was browsing one of my favourite dealer's offerings at the recent show. He had three nice 1600-1800 dated pieces, the W&M shilling, Anne halfcrown and I believe the third was a Charles II halfcrown. I ended up buying the first two. The Charles II piece was decent, but didn't quite have the toning or "look" that I like.

The W&M shilling has some nice red/orange/yellow toning on the obverse which photographed as kind of a brown/orange color. Somewhat of a circulated cameo look, which we both seem to like on circulated silver image

I haven't looked too much at the earlier hammered pieces. I've been drawn to the more life-like portraits of the late hammered and early milled era.

  • Beautiful coins with a rich history. I really like that Victoria half crown design.

    Lovely !
I'm partial to the Elizabeth image quick Q...how does one tell the denomination of these at a glance ?
Other than simply knowing, from having seen them before...image

Well, the population who spent 'em no doubt went by their size and diameter, as they weren't quite as literate a crowd, Shakespeare notwithstanding. But sometimes it is indeed hard to tell when you're looking at a picture online and aren't completely familiar with the types. I myself thought his W&M shilling was a halfcrown at first glance, I guess because my W&M type coin had been a halfcrown and I've never had one of their shillings.

Dunno why, but I'm more partial to dated Elizabeth I coins. Something about early dated coins still turns me on. So if I ever pursue this avenue again, I'll have to go for a Lizzie with a date. (Not that there's anythign wrong with the undated ones- far from it!)

    nice coins-

The 6d graded by NGC looks like a pleasant example- Without seeing in hand, the obverse is a little flat and it looks more like wear than the typical strike- VF35 would be my grade

Very strong piece--XF-45? You don't see then like that very often.

Nice Lizzy there. I'd called it gVF. So in NGC grading I think that would translate to EF-40 or 45.

Pokermandude...didn't mean to highjack your threadimage , it's NGC 30, and I personally wouldn't be able to grade these with any accuracy.
My GB monarchs are stalled out somewhat, but I'd love to keep the set going. Very cool set BTW !
