Fun with Photography: Canadian $150 Gold Hologram Proof, Year of the Snake
I got this coin completely raw, so with no plastic to get in the way of my lighting, I thought I'd have some fun. It's a really neat piece to have in hand.

Once I get my new Rebel T3 DSLR, these are on my list of coins to practice on.

Any opinion on current Canadian sets or coins re collector interest? I bought the all silver War of 1812 set last year and am considering the all silver, gold plated 100th Anniversary of Arctic Expedition.
The coins are beautiful, mintages extremely low. Downside is, IMO, too many specially minted "instant" rarities.
I also buy a lot of the Canadian Maples with Wildlife, for the silver bullion and also the collectibility. Any opinion on these, too?
Cheers!
Bob
PS: That IS a beautiful snake!

But the RCM issues sooooooo many serious crap issues, like $ 8 coins, triangular 3 dollar coins etc, etc.... Just try ande take one to the bank, or even pay for your milk with it.
You might stand a good chance of having SS bracelets fitted to your arms by an RCMP officer.
many are issued only for their overseas market and not even available in Canada.
They can limit or not an issue... all up to them and by doing so they keep the collectors interested in these "rarities".
the second issue I have with their practice of artificially creating "rare collectors varieties" by purposely making these varieties.
like 90 degrees die rotations etc, etc.
I simply do not believe these are co-incidental mint errors. today's technology just does not allow these mistakes to be made. ( unless it is done purposely).

Canadian coins are often very beautiful and well-struck. I've settled on just one series to collect: colorized maples with Swarovski crystals. Yes, it's 3x bullion price as issued, more when you include slabbing, but hey I enjoy looking at them.
This one is probably my favorite:
(Just think of city streets clogged with a hundred thousand horses each generating 15 lbs of manure every day...)
