World and Ancient Coin Collecting Strategies

Hello,

I am wrapping up my Dansco 7070 and am feeling drawn to world and ancients.

I have purchased a few books, and done some research but was wondering what suggestions everyone had about sets/subsets.

I am liking the early cob/real type coinage, Spanish and Mexican coins, coins of Europe, Chinese coins. I know that is fairly broad but of anyone has any insight to how they are doing, have done or have seen how collecting can be done in these areas I would appreciate it.

Also, almost more importantly, any recommendations on books etc.

    The possibilities are endless and that is what makes it fun

    -British type by denominaton and Monarch
    -German States- one coin from each state
    -Mexico type and Dansco albums exist for this

    If albums are a thing that makes it interesting, Whitman had blue book shelf albums for a Victorian type set

    I started with British types sets by denomination, then added a few date sets which I continue to work on. I've also added some German States and Swiss Cantons as secondary collections. I'd just find an area that you like either historically or artistically, start with a type set aither by denomination or ruler and see where ti goes from there.

    I collect 1914-1921 Chinese YSK "Fat Man" Dollars - what a great set to start. There are only a few dates: 1914,1919,1920,1921 - and a major variety, the 1914-O mint mark. 1914-o and 1919 are the key dates of the set. Once you get the first five, there are many many varieties you can collect.

    For me its art and/or history, generally both. That means 16-18th century material even though I do collect 19-20th century medals.

    If you have deep pockets, you can try Mexican Republic 4 Reales by date, mint, and assayer. You'd never complete it in your lifetime, but you'd have fun trying. It's far fewer coins than the Republic 8 Reales series, but they are tougher to find.

    More pedestrian is Mexican 20th Century, quite fun and currently out of favor (except for the rarities), so the prices are cheap.
