Is an effective gold-only detector possible?

I confess, I don't have the patience to sift through all kinds of junk metal in hopes of finding gold. And the thrill of finding common silver coins, pennies and nickels has definitely waned, especially when the realization struck I was barely finding enough to subsidize batteries and the detector itself. In this advanced technological age, is an effective gold-only detector on the horizon? Is it even possible? I've done little hard research, but what reading I've done seems to indicate we're not there yet. I'd be grateful for a little education on the subject.
