Value Question - Full Size WAX Babe Ruth - SERIOUSLY

Hi all.

The attached auction center is literally around the block from me.

They're having a wax sculpture auction tomorrow from some famous early american wax sculpture artist. Click around and you'll see there is a Ruth.

This would be the pinnacle piece in my man cave.

Anyone have any knowledge or experience when it comes to valuation?

I'm not sure, but its gotta be in the millions....

    EDIT:
yes it was a joke, I'm not sure but I'd agree with the 1.5 - 2 k range

That head shot of Ruth is very realistic. Can't help you on pricing that, but it would definitely be cool to have.

    Good luck!!!

    Millions was a joke, right?

I'm thinking 2-3K max. Auction estimate is 2-20K

That's a pretty interesting piece.. I showed this to my wife my wife and asked if I could buy it. She said no way... And this would be coming from a woman who once wanted a life size giraffe sculpture in our living room.

I agree with you Bob. I don't think I'd personally go over $2,500 for it, but these may be more valuable to collectors than that. Let us know how it goes.

$2-20k estimate? That's like putting a Ichiro bunt and Ruthian homer in the same category. I would say you really couldn't go wrong with $2K.

If you buy that make sure you understand the maintenance involved. Certain features need to be cleaned with proper tools and fairly often too. If you ever slacked and it got bad it would cost quite a bit to have it done professionally.

Should have gone with the old better to ask forgiveness than permission thing.

Regardless, I'm sure I'll have some important "errands" to run tomorrow afternoon by myself, eh?

Why do you want that? What if you're looking at it some day and it blinks its eyes or asks for a hot dog or something? Haven't you ever seen that episode of the Twilight zone?image

Bob, you approached it all wrong. You should have just bought it, and brought it home and told your wife..."look honey, I bought this candle for you!"

I'm a big Ruth collector, but frankly, I'd think having a wax statue of him in your house would be creepy.

    I'd pay $2K for that.

($3K for one of Veronica Belmont though)

Uh, wayyyyyyyy too creepy. Maybe it's just my monitor, but he looks like a vampire from those pics.

However, it'd be an awesome prank. Stick it in the corner, and invite some friends over for a scary movie. Make an excuse for getting up, and move it a little closer to the couch every time you do it.

  • Lelands auctions around 1 year ago had a similar one for sale (and in my opinion nicer). I was very interested in it. I did not win the bid but I believe it went for under 5,000. you can go to their website and look it up. I remember the piece was very fragile and just moving it the wrong way would result in an arm coming undone from the torso.

    Good luck!

Well - I did not go the auction. Decided that I agree it is waaaaay to creepy, and I didn't feel like having it shipped if I happened to win it. Which, BTW, I would have. Just checked, and it only received the opener of $1,000.

I would agree with the wife on this one. The creepy factor is high. It reminds me of a dead body in a casket at his funeral or wake.

I know you weren't being serious but actually many baseball fans don't realize that Ruth NEVER played a regular season game with the Yankees wearing an interlocking "NY" on his uniform chest (wore it once in an exhibition game with Walter Johnson).

Neat item to own if you had the room...
