Why were Red Man tobacco cards issued with tabs?

Looking at photos of Red Man cards that have tabs, the actual tabs must have been less than a half inch. Does anyone know the purpose of issuing the cards with these tabs? The tabs basically say "cut here" and give the player name and card number, which are also found at the top of the card.

The back of that tab states something to the effect of "Save your tab to collect a Red Man Baseball Cap". I'm guessing you had to send in x amount of tabs to get a Baseball Hat.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • You could send in 50 tabs for a cap.

Does anyone have an old redeemed cap to show? Would love to see one. I've been thinking about embarking on putting this set together.

I am friends with the author if this site. This site has lots of information.

    Red Man Cards

There is a picture of some cards, an advertising piece, and a pack (that's mine).

Here is a cap that you would redeem by sending in fifty tabs.

The insider brim looked like this with "red man baseball" on the inside: (Caps are very tough to find but Hunt Auctions has them from time to time).

Here is a copy of the order form you sent in to pick your cap team and size (a kid's size).

Good luck. The cards are nice and look great graded. Autographed versions are neat too. Mid grades of 5-7 are very affordable.

Here is something Doran from these boards put together for me:

Good luck and have fun if you decide to go after these. Let me know if you have any questions or you can email the redman site owner (Ron) at rgold2000@aol.com

Awesome stuff guys, thanks! I didn't think that maybe there would be more information or instructions on the back of the tab image

I really love these cards. One of my favorite cards I own is a Warren Spahn autographed one. I'd love to collect more some day!
