Bored Here? Time for a Pay It Forward Thread??

It has been a while since I have seen this thread on the boards. With all the inactivity here it seems like a good time to put this back in action. We have had great success over the years so long as people do not take advantage of other’s generosity. I think we have for the most part some great guys here. The Secret Santa was very successful.
Pay It Forward threads are cool and keep the activity to a higher level since you always have to check to see what is being offered. I’ve won some really nice unopened stuff and an auto Ken Griffey Jr. card.
For those of you who have not taken part in a past “CU Board Pay It Forward” it works like this----
I will post something that I am offering for free. The 1st person to see it and claim it gets it. You claim it by posting in the thread that you want the item. I will mail the item to the person who claims it AFTER he posts what he is offering as his “pay it forward”. The person who offers the item and mails it pays for shipping and insurance. The person who claims the item(s) must then put something else up for someone else to grab w-in 48 hours.
I have a number of rules that I think would make this work. Have tried posting it in 1 thread--but keeps getting rejected because of Error Code 113--what the heck is that?
Anyway--let me know and I'll get it going if it'll go over

Manny ... as you mentioned it was a real fun thread the last time we did this. I was quite active in that thread. As we have discussed in the past, unfortunately there were a couple ***holes who ruined it for everyone by putting up "crap" after taking some real nice items. Not sure about the rules you are going to list, but one suggestion I would have is that the items must be graded. In addition, I would add that there can only be 1 or 2 cards in each listing and they need to have a FMV equal to or greater than what they took.
1 Rule: Me and 1 other person will play "sheriff" so that we say if what they are offering is equal to or better than what they took.
2 Rule: If you claim something-- it is NOT SHIPPED--until you have posted what you are offering AND the sheriffs have OK'd it
3 Rule--Only PSA, SGC, BBCE authenticated items. Limited to no more than 3-4 cards/items
4 Rule: MAx value of $150

Doug - I agree with most of what you said, but this could create a problem down the line, which will kill the thread. Not that I think someone will put up a nicely grade 1950/60s HOF, in turn the next person put up the Mike L 88 Donruss PSA 1, but I think we can only go so high. If everyone is going to have to equal or beat the person before them in value, it gets hard to do after awhile.
I know this takes the whole pay it forward thing and makes it about money, but I do agree some basic rules would be good. I would throw this out as a proposition...we set a minimum amount. Whether that is $50, $100, or whatever. If someone wants to drop a $500 card, then that is fine, but then it doesn't require the next person to drop a $500 card. That would knock out a lot of participants pretty quickly.
I don't know, just my two cents...they might not be worth anything!
I like it but this one bothers me a little. Rule 2: If you claim something-- it is NOT SHIPPED--until you have posted what you are offering AND the sheriffs have OK'd it. Who are we to say whats good and not. I would rather let the members decide and if its not taken in 48 hrs, then the person has to chnage it up. But to downwrite tell someone your stuff isnt good enough doesnt feel right either. I dont think the members need to be babysat to get an approval. If someone was to post raw and beat up 62 Topps and someone wants them, let them grab it. Remember, everyone has different wants and interest in this big hobby of ours.
$150 will also put me and many out of the game. Why not a smaller amount. Even raw cards and such as long as it reaches the $20 or $50 limit. Whatever - but $150 is a lot imo.

I understand what you're saying here, but I think there are people that would want to give more and not expect as much in return. Again, it is all about what people's needs are as you said. Maybe a PSA 5 1952 semistar will be as appealing as a PSA 10 from the 1980 set for some.
I don't know a few more tweaks might be needed...
But Manny, if you want to get this started, you can do what you please. Thats just my thoughts is all.
And I do like the suggestion on allowing someone to take a $150 item and not have to replace it with equal value. But how do we do that and make it fair?
In fairness, the ones that have been crucified here have usually deserved it. Not saying you but others I have in mind. Its the ol' bucket of ice cream and a bucket of crap.
Which is why the previous person doesnt send out their items till someone claims the next persons lot to ensure they put something of quality and value.

I think you'd have to set a minimum and maximum value, and as long as the lot offered meets the minimum, no griping from the peanut gallery about the value relative to what was taken.
I'm not sure what the sweet spot for a range is where it isn't so costly that more people are likely to participate, but the lots are nice enough that they continue to move. And the range probably has to be pretty narrow. Personally, I'd be much more likely to participate with a range of $25-$50 or maybe $50-$75, since the idea is supposed to be to have fun and get cards where they are most appreciated, not to prove who can be the most generous, and there are plenty of great cards that can be offered up in either of those price ranges. If it were say, $25-$150, it could open up the possibility for folks to take advantage, or at least be perceived as taking advantage.
i've participated in a couple of these pif threads in the past, imo $150 is too high and not true to the spirit of the thread. and you shouldn't need to outdo the last batch value-wise. just make a floor/ceiling limit of like $50-$75, so a few bucks off here or there won't make a difference and there'd be less pressure for more members to join. if you make it $150 and someone takes a $160 card and "only" puts up a $100 lot the thread is gonna go south in a hurry.
I think the above statement makes sense. It will allow more people to participate and there is not as much incentive for those few people to try to take advantage of others. If we are going to have a minimum of $50.00 I would like to see the amount of cards/items limited to 2 (if we are using only slabbed cards and BBCE authenticated items.)

I agree with Doug. Anything more than 2 cards and the offerrings are not going to be appetizing.
So if we go with this, it will be $50 (min) to $75 (max), no more than 2 slabbed/BBCE items. Manny, thoughts?
limit will be 2 cards/items
and at that minimum/maximum I do not think there will be a need for anyone to play sheriff
looks like we'll put it down to $50 minimum and $75 max. I'll work on starting the thread for Sunday and will post all the other rules tomorrow.

Sounds good Manny. Looking forward to seeing how this works out. If everyone is fair with what they list, this should be a lot of fun.
Edited to add: As Marc suggested earlier, are you going to move the thread to B/S/T?
