At long last I may be able to resume my dream of doing 1971 Topps PSA 7 HOFers/CLs!

As you guys may have heard off and on lately, my wife has graciously allowed me to have a small portion of her inheritance from her late mother to help me get caught up in my cards (and games!) collection. Now I am very happy to report that I think I got 1973-79 near completion (still need the raw part of 1973 and of course the Schmidt RC, but no real rush for it) and if I'm really lucky, there's a guy here who might be able to set me up with 1974-79 Topps football raw sets too! image And of course there's still my on going insert project.

All that being said, now that I got all that "other stuff" about where I'd like it, there is one big dream I always had and that's 1971 Topps. Several years back someone here (I forget who) got me a VERY good head start on them (my objective is to do all the HOFers/checklists in PSA 7) which IIRC included Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Rose and others (it wasn't cheap but it was a lot easier to get a good chunk of them in one purchase). Sadly back in 2010 I was forced to sell them (LONG story).

So now I feel I may be in position to possibly start that project again. Trouble is I'm feeling a bit discouraged because it seems like if anything, 1971's (even in PSA 7) seem to have gotten a bit pricey. I compiled a wishlist of the top 50 cards in that set, plus the seven checklists, and even if I skip the top 12 for now (Munson, Clemente, Ryan, Rose, Mays, Blyleven, Brooks Robinson, Baker RC, Bench, Reggie, Aaron, Banks) the others do seem to add up to quite a bit more than I would've figured (if anything after five or so years I would've thought with more PSA cards in general added to the supply they'd be more affordable now), so I am feeling a bit discouraged. image

I guess what I could do is do the 1972 Topps HOFers/checklist PSA 7's instead (or in addition to) the 1971's. I mean there's nothing wrong with 1972 right? I do adore the 1975 set and 1972's are quite colorful in their own right, no? And the 1972's seem to be a LOT more affordable than 1971's (the big three cards, Fisk/Rose/Ryan each go for no more than $50ish).

So what should I do? 1971s or 1972s?

I would stick with 1971 if you are willing to do it slowly. The cards are pricey but it is definitely a challenge to find cards that meet your expectations. That is my favorite set from the 1970s so my answer may be a bit biased. Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you like the 71s, but cannot afford them, why not do a solid EX. set with PSA 5 HOFers/Checklists? True EX. condition cars have great eye appeal.

VERY GOOD ADVICE. If you take your time you will be able to find "5s" that look very much like "7s". The cost of a STAR in a "5" will be about 1/5 to 1/3 the price of a "7".

    STAY HEALTHY!

Someone on the board gave you a bunch of 71 Topps cards for free. (got you a very good head start)

Then, you sold them. For money.

Now, your wishlist is for someone to "help you with a good head start" on them again?

No, charrigan, I had to pay several hundred dollars for that group of 1971 graded cards at the time...I never said they were free. But I said it was a very good head start in the sense that I was able to get so many in one purchase for a good price. And I felt very fortunate at the time that I got the chance. And no, DanBessette, the guy with the football card sets is not giving them away either. Again, I'm glad that I'm able to possible get them in one purchase instead of trying to get them one year at a time (and often the ones on Ebay are not particularly good quality as quality raw football is obviously tougher to come by than baseball).

Well I was thinking that should I get down to near where I only like the biggest cards (like Munson and Clemente) I guess I could "cheat" and only get those as 6's image

Sorry for my false assumptions. I have edited the untrue parts of my previous post. But I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to another thread.

Edit to add: so you got VCP and SMR mixed up. The point is you thought you were asking for paid content to be given to you for free.... For FIFTY cards!! Not 1 or 2..... 50. Poor taste in my opinion and I stand by it.

In the pet peeves section you said "asking for charity" and because of the suspicious timing I felt it was directed/hinted at me.

But yeah, I do own up to the VCP thing even though at the time I didn't fully understand exactly what is was (I just heard that term thrown around a lot).

  • Estil, thanks for clarifying. I wasn't accusing you, I was asking if my interpretation of what you had written was correct.
  • EstilEstil Posts: 7,088 ✭✭✭✭
Well I hope that's all cleared up now, so back to our regularly scheduled program. It sounds like I should hold off on both 1971s and 1972s for now (unless I can get a really good deal on a group of several 1971 PSA 7 HOFers in one purchase or something) until I got my other collecting goals (especially those insert sets) nearly done. It will be so super cool dudish to finally have finished my 1974-79 Topps sets with key cards in PSA 7 (sometimes 8's for 78/79) and maybe even have nice football sets for those years too. I think that in of itself is quite an achievement, no?

you can also buy some pretty good psa 6 71 topps also. there are some pretty decent looking 71's in psa 6 grade that look as good as some seven's do. I have quite a few stars in psa 6 grade that look just as good as seven's do in my collection. I have all of the hall of famers.

Its none of my business, so Im obv not asking for details, but in general will your wife give a bit larger than an small part of her inheritance? Vs. asking random strangers on a message board for multiple things. (Whether free or a good start. Im confused there.)Which can be taken the wrong way and not get you off to a good start with those whom you are asking for help. I doubt your wife would want you portrayed in a way which you're not intending. Its both your and her money (maybe) but some of those 71s should hold their basic value. Should. IMHO.

When you do have time, whats the long story about having to sell the 71 set? How did that go? AH, here, ebay? Im wondering if I bought some of them back then. Thanks and good luck.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

Like I said before all I meant by "a good start" would be if someone had several of the PSA 7's I could get in one purchase instead of trying to piecemeal it off Ebay. Now I know we live in an age of smartphones/Facebook/Twitter and so on where many people think nothing of pretty much broadcasting their lives for the whole world to see but I've just never been comfortable with that idea. Let's just say what happened in 2010 (and the 1971's I had to sell I was only about halfwayish regarding getting all the PSA 7 HOFers) was probably the most difficult time we and I ever faced (and I've mostly moved on from it so I'd really rather not go into detail). That's also why I never said how much she got or how much I got and I don't think I've even said too much yet about what I picked out either...I guess I'm just a stickler for privacy I guess?

I'm sorry but I sorta thought it was common sense that when I said in the OP about the 1971s meant that I wanted to see if someone here could sell me a group of several for a good price. And yes my wife will help me out, within reason of course image But even so I want to still be careful about getting good prices.
