Authentic Pack without Gum?

Hi All,

I recently had the opportunity to inspect some packs of 1977 Star Wars. One of the packs did not contain gum; however, the roller marks lined up perfectly and ran uniform across the back of the pack, there was no sign of any foreign substance that could have been used to reseal, and the corner folds looked good. To me, the pack looked as good as you could expect (putting great weight on the fact the the roller marks looked perfect), except that it was missing gum.

Has anyone ever come across a pack from Topps from this era that was was authentic, but missing the gum?

Thanks!

It's pretty rare, but not completely unheard of. I would expect a pretty decent discount on that one since I doubt anybody would be willing to authenticate it. Which series?

I've seen it several times with Wacky Packages packs. If you think about it, no pack faker would leave the gum out, the gum being missing makes it way more likely to be legit than the average normal pack.

i agree with paulmaul but then again fakers by nature are dishonest and lazy so i could see them putting out packs without gum by accident or "who cares, ill have their money by time they notice" or if they notice

I had a partial box of 77 baseball wax packs including several without gum and cards were gem out of the pack, including stars and a number of psa 10s. Agree with David~I'd actually feel better about the authenticity with something as weird as that. Resealers typically substitute late 80s gum if they can't acquire the correct example.

The pack was a Series 4 pack. It had everything you wanted to see, but for the gum. Maybe it was more prevalent with 1977, since this is a 1977 issue?

I remember getting Star Wars packs without the gum. You will pay less for cards that are potentially worth more.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

I want to thank the board for providing a great education in the unopened arena. In the past, I would have dismissed the pack as fake, but now have a good idea of what to look for in a pack that's been tampered with. Thanks!
