For all the other honors (indeed pretty much sainthood) Jackie Robinson has gotten...

Okay all of us are aware of Jackie Robinson and how he forever changed baseball in 1947. And of course he has received numerous honors over the years, especially in 1997 for the 50th anniversary of his historic achievement all of MLB retiring his number.

That being said, in 1987, the 40th anniversary of his breaking the color barrier in MLB, he received another great honor; he got a major MLB award named after him! In fact in 1947 he was the first ever recipient of it (just like how Vince Lombardi himself received the first two Lombardi trophies)! I am of course referring to the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year award.

But here's the thing, nobody calls the award for the top pitcher the Pitcher of the Year award or the Most Valuable Pitcher award...it's called simply the Cy Young. So for all the other honors Jackie has gotten, why is this MAJOR honor of having one of the "big three" annual individual honors named after him overlooked? I mean having a major league sport's ROY named after you is not exactly chopped liver, no?

Because he only played 10 years (barely),was below average in the World Series and did not want to play for the Giants.

The number of syllables (and/or word length) can play a part in what we call things. The fewer, the better.

best pitcher award - 5 syllables

    best pitcher - 3

    Cy Young - 2

rookie of the year - 5

    ROY (very short word)

rookie of the year - 5

    Jackie Robinson - 5

Had the best pitcher award been named after "Abraham Whitestonecliffe", I doubt we'd call it that. image

    Good question.

I've always preferred how hockey's trophies are known by their names instead of for what they are awarded (Hart, Pearson/Lindsay, Vezina, Calder, Norris, Conn Smythe, Jennings, Masterson, etc.). Same holds true for the AHL, such as winning the Eddie Shore for example. How about NCAA? We have the Hobey Baker, the Heisman, the Tewaaraton, etc.

Now that you bring it up, I never noticed how the MLB ROY award seems to be a bit of an anomaly that way.

I disagree with Greg. As only a casual observer of the NHL, it's frustrating to me that I don't know what half of those awards are actually for.

As far as the Jackie thing.... it's racism! RACISM, I TELL YOU!! SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!!! JACKIE ROBINSON ISN'T RESPECTED BY BASEBALL!!!!

psychump, did you find the sarcastic font yet?

Anyone else have their number universally retired? And then worn by every MLB player once a year? Thats pretty cool.

    Yes. Wayne Gretzky.

Edit to add: Universally retired, but obviously not worn by every MLB player once a year image

i don't think MLB players wear Gretzky's number...

my bad, i don't follow hockey....prob because when they announce the winners of the smythe, jones, or lady bing awards i immediately tune out and switch channels....i agree with above that I have no idea what those awards are for...

..i think rivera was the last player to be grandfathered in to wear 42 before he retired...but i still view 42 as Robinsons number....Mario great in his own right

I guess if the media is gonna jump all over that whole "Redskins is a rotten, evil RACIST!!! nickname and has gottago!!!!!" bandwagon, then why not encourage MLB's ROY to include the Jackie Robinson part? That would be a much better gesture as far as promoting racial equality/history and such goes.
