So let's say you found an unopened 1952 Topps baseball box

Do you get the box authenticated by BBCE, do you rip it and send cards in to get graded (possible Mantle), or do you have each pack graded?

Comments

  • The box is worth way more whole than individual packs sold. Opening the packs could lead to big bucks but I'm NOT a gambling man...I'm a chicken lol!

Sending that box to Steve would be a mistake. Pretty sure he'd make an offer for it that couldn't be refused. image

Send it to Steve. To scarce to open.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Send it to one of the top Auction Houses. Negotiate to get half of the buyer's premium in addition to the hammer price. Have Steve examine and wrap it prior to going on the auction block. Be sure the box is advertised and known to everyone in the collecting world for 6-12 months prior to the auction. Then, on the final day of the auction, buy yourself your favorite drink, sit back and watch the numbers fly!

I'm going to rip it. Why you say? When are you going to get another opportunity to rip a 1952 wax box?

The last time a full box came up - I think it was in the early 2000's - it went for like 200K?

    God knows what now?

Me? I'd trade it for 20 yrs back on my age! image

As long as we're in full-on fantasy mode, if you were to wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and discover that Liam Hemsworth's face is now your face, what's the first thing you would do?

Little debate...I would PERSONALLY take it to Steve. Or else fly him in. Money has now become no object. But it doesn't leave my eyes.

Debatable.... Sell it....but decide whether to pull one pack and set a date and time to rip it...with gloved, hands. Gotta take the chance of hitting a Mick with one pack. How many have had that opportunity? That experience would be a priceless lifetime memory. Could even sell tickets to the event.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image
  • I'd work another 9 years then sell the box, combine the proceeds of the sale with what I already have saved and retire at 50.

Like previous post, I would personally take it to Steve at BBCE and get it authenticated and then also personally take it to an auction house. Advertise the baby like crazy and then retire.

    Depends on the series...
    Good for you.

I would bring the box to PSA and rip it in front of them. They would grade the cards immediately removing any potential issue mailing them the results. I would sell every card except for the PSA 9 Mantle and the PSA 9 Mays that I pulled. Perfectly centered, of course.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

And that box had questions behind it. If a truly authentic high number wax box was discovered, I don't see how it could sell for less than 7 figures.

If Pete Rose is there, he'll be wearing them.

Wait. What was the question again?
  • Interesting. What was questionable about the previous 1952 box? Because I agree that 200k seems low to me. Where is it sitting now? And, yes, I agree that it hits seven figures.

    Im selling without a doubt.

Depends on the series, but I would drive it to Steve at BBCE and have it authenticated. I would then make it known it existed and let MLI, Heritage... bid on the right to sell it. I would market it like crazy to get maximum exposure, showcase it at the Natty. While cracking it open would be fun I was not even remotely around in 1952 so it is not like I would be reliving my childhood years.

Hopefully the box would sell for $1-1.5 million, and I would take the proceeds and do the following:

    * Give 10% to my church to use for a new youth center

    * pay off the house

    * fund college for junior - since I am using his "college fund" to buy a few cards image

    * take family on another Alaskan cruise - if you have not done this trip before it is worth every penny.

    * buy a nicely centered 52 Mantle in the best grade available PSA 6-8.

    * go on a shopping spree at BBCE for a bunch of boxes from my childhood (mid 70's)

    * get a couple of 1986 Fleer hoops boxes certified by BBCE and rip a couple of them.

    * force Tim to sell me a bunch of 70's product by offering him over market pricing and some Mets gear!

    * save the rest for the round of purchases

Let's just say if you need one, find one with little fingers.

Pretty close to what KC said cuz I'd want to keep the integrity of my fictional found box. But I'd buy a complete Topps pack run 52-80 just to rip.

That is exactly what I thought. No way I am going to take a chance on sending it to him.

I would have it authenticated then get advisement on cost to do a group rip...I would get paid and EVERYONE that wanted a peice would have a shot at some nice 52s. I'd be lying if I said I haven't day dreamed about this before.

An offer of $500k was made to someone who had more than one such 52 Topps wax boxes a few years ago (before the run-up). That offer was declined.

With PSA 8 Mantle's going north of $250k now, if a PSA 9 Mantle were pulled from such a box it alone would be a 7-figure card. Therefore, the wax box would easily be in the 7-figures price range.

would you look at that, there it was sitting right behind the 52 Bowman Baseball and 52 Bowman Large Football boxes....sheesh, I need to be more careful of that box....oh yeah, you know its a FASC box.

On a serious note on this fanciful topic....I am with KendallCat and would split it with him and his causes. Together, we would crack open a ton of wax while cajoling Tim to let go of more of his unopened collection.

I would take it to BBCE and I would sell it in an auction. I would then pay off my college loans and invest the rest of the money. I am too young to retire just yet, even from what that box would bring.
    What I Collect:

I'm sure BBCE would negotiate a better deal, but how much could a box like this cost for him just to authenticate? If deemed questionable, are those fees returned? If not, that's a gamble I don't know if I'd take.
