Yankeesman's Rookie Cup Catchers Autograph Quest

I'm excited about this project. I had posted a week or so ago asking about a Benito Santiago rookie cup Topps card as his was the only one I didn't find for BBWAA rookie of the year catchers. Turns out he doesn't have one (darn you Matt Nokes!) but I'm going ahead and trying for all the rookie of the year catchers (BBWAA, Sporting News, Baseball Digest, etc) with their Topps card with the Rookie Cup. Here's the first slabbed one I've gotten in:

I have a couple of others that have come in but I won't post those until they've received a blessing and a slabbing in Newport Beach.

The quest begins!

Yikes. You had to pick catcher…Thurman Munson!!! I have been buying the signed trophy cards for a while now and really enjoy the set, especially signed. Until the last 5 years or so, i was probably around 95% complete. from 1960-2010. I'd love to find a 71 Munson for sale and would love even more the ability to afford it and not feel like my money could have better spent on necessities. Good luck with your quest.
I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

Thanks. Yeah, the Munson will be the odyssey of this project. Crazy that the Munson will likely cost about as much as a Ruth cut auto.

I collect Yankee team sets. Still need a nice munson in psa 8. The cost has been prohibitive. I can't imagine what and you can get one for.

Good luck on a very nice journey.

Got some nice poppage back from Newport Beach today. I thought there was about a .2% chance the Piazza was legit when I picked it up for $10 buy it now on the bay. Was so pumped that it came back authentic. Thanks for looking!

Got this one in the mail today. I thought this guy was going to be a stud for the Yankees when they got him. I do believe he caught Jim Abbott's no-hitter if my memory doesn't fail me.

Ted, you really are the man when it comes to vintage autos. I never would have known that.

This one I received in the mail yesterday in honor of my buddy Dan. Here's the signed brother-in-law of the cool Vene version of this card he sent me:

Mr. Dietz is no longer with us so I'm trying to pick up these rookie cup autos when I run across them.

Thanks for the kind words. It's only from filling holes in other people's sets for trading towards my 52 set that I've compiled all this useless information.

I also got a sub in and all of them I've posted before they were slabbed but I'll post this one here as well. I picked up a Benito Santiago even though he doesn't have the rookie cup distinction as he was a rookie of the year catcher which is what got me started on this whole thing.

So here's one of the more obscure Rookie Cup catchers. Jesse Gonder had a 15 year professional career, mostly as a backup catcher but did have the distinction of being the 1963 Topps Rookie Cup catcher. This is one of the years that Topps decided not to put a trophy or cup on the card of the player. Usually it's on the year following the award so for these cases I'm just going with that next year.
