Pretty sexy coin if it's really a proof, but I have my doubts. First, the date does come PL. Second, on a quick look, I'm not convinced that the position of the date is correct for a proof. Do your homework before bidding.

For those with high speed connections, you may want to click on this high resolution image of a no-questions proof. Check out the position and direction of the dentils vs. the digits of the date, and compare to the Cooper coin.

BTW, I have not yet tried to figure out if there are multiple die varieties for the proof, but it seems unlikely.

I can't see the differences that were recommended. To my eye
it looks like left over Proof Dies (Pyle) striking a "for circulation"
coin (Cooper).

If you look at the actual auction page for the coin, and not this bad photograph presented earlier, the photo is better and much more clear. The coin was sent in on 2-day walk through, a week before I started cataloging the lots and didn't come back for 3 weeks. PCGS seemed to want to make sure it was a proof because of their guarantee and any buyer has that guarantee should it not be a proof.

By the "bad photograph presented earlier" do you mean the TrueView / CoinFacts photo taken by Phil and the PCGS team (the only photos posted on this thread)?

Yes, the PCGS TrueView photo does not capture the coin at all. https://alexcooper.hibid.com/lot/21468353/-us--1881-coronet--10-gold-eagle?tab=0&cpage=10 If you click on the auction photo, you can see the cameo effect. The True view image does not capture the cameo and seems to highlight the hairlines which make it a Proof-61.
With all due respect to the True view team, they didn't do a great job on this coin or the 2 Draped Bust Halves in the auction. Those 2 coins are white coins, no damage at all but white, probably dipped at some point coins. The TrueView images seem to add colors and toning that are not there. I have seen PCGS photos that are great in the past and was surprised by these 3 photographs. Having seen all three coins in my hand and under the loop, and looking at the True View images, I think I can make that observation.
There are 2 photographers at the auction house, both professional photographers and graduates of Maryland Institute College of Art.

Not in the least, I just cataloged lots 201-510. 0 coins belong to me. My job is done no matter what happens now. I was conservative in the grading and I suspect many of the gold coins to grade higher than my listing.
I will be there on the first preview day helping out, as well as the morning of the auction.
