Starting Lineups for $1.00......worth it?............. partial list posted.

I know someone that will be closing his store shortly. He offered me about 100 Starting Lineups for $1.00 each. He said they are from the 1988 to about 2000 and all sports. Now I know a lot from 1988 are worth good money but in general, is $1.00 each a good price to buy and resell via ebay (or flea markets / garage sales) for a decent profit?

I have no idea what players he has or what years most of them are from as I was just speaking with him on the phone.
If I buy, would it be better to open and sell the cards and figures separately?

Thank you,
Robert

The 'junk wax' ones go for $2 or $3 unopened. So there room to make a little.

Shipping is what usually kills trying to flip SLUs on eBay, especially on the low dollar ones. I would definitely pick them up at that price and just try to grade the cards or sell raw. Garage sale or flea market would work as well for the unopened.

I'd be interested in any Mark Grace ones if there's any in there (and you buy).

OK sounds like I should take them. I will take a quick look tomorrow and then decide. Baz518, any Mark Grace, their yours.

Some day - down the road - someone will put those out at a small show and they'll be so old, they'll be new. And, the little kids may love'm?

If they're in Nm-mt condition? Good for a buck - see if there's any early Griffeys?

I remember when the Hockey ones were bringing good money.

The card inside them is what I like.

I think you should go for it at around $100 for 100. you should easily be able to make a few bucks on reselling.

Unless there is a hit in the lot, they sell on ebay for less than a buck each. 1988 Football are decent and obviously the 1988 Jazz. A few obscure players go for big money. I get the sense that the lot contains "commons". Even so, if they appear to have been well cared for and in good shape, the cards are worth grading as the overall pops are low on most. It comes down to what your time and space for storing them are worth. Ebay is a loosing proposition unless you get a hit as I mentioned. Flipping them for $2 or $3 apiece at a flea market sounds good, but in reality you would need to sell all of them, subtract your day at the event, gas and food, etc. and you probably still come out at a loss. I personally like them and have a few, but the market for these is fairly sparse.

I have sold and bought a few small SLU collections. In terms of making money, you will get your money back in high grade SLU cards. Resale of the figures on ebay may not
be worth your time. I still enjoy collection SLU cards and figures.

Hopefully, you will have a few RCs in the bunch, such as Chipper Jones, Derek Jeter, Brett Favre, and etc.

    Good luck.

It really depends on what the figures are...the wrong 100 pieces and you may be lucky to ever get your money back.

If enough decent pieces in the lot, toys for tots at Christmas is a great way to move the piece you do not want/need.

That seems cheap but 100 of these seems like a lot to store too, let alone ship if you are selling online.

Toys for Tots. Great idea. I will check into that if I buy the lot.

When I got to his store today, he had them all in an over sized clear trash bag. He said he saw Mattingly in there along with Bonds, Frank Thomas and D. Hasek. So I decided what the heck. Not too bad I guess. There are a few more stars not listed. Besides looking each one on ebay, is there a web site or price guide to see what some of the better ones are? Thanks, Robert
Here are some of what was in there:

1988 P Ewing (Package beat to heck) Will open and get card graded I guess.

I am fairly certain that Tuff Stuff magazine price guide lists them. There is also a Beckett guide that has them, but can't remember which one.
  • pheldaphelda Posts: 207 ✭✭✭
Tuff Stuff is free, just click Figures and the price guide pops up
  • pheldaphelda Posts: 207 ✭✭✭
Forgot to mention, the pricing is old, but at least gives you knowledge of what ones are decent.

Here's two that I like and wouldn't part with - I have probably about 150 of them parked in tuperwear type cartons.

In your biz, rain slows ya down - here we welcome all the rain we can get since it usually comes so infrequently.

Good to see you posting buddy!

A good rule of thumb with starting lineups, many times, especially with the older stuff, the no names are the ones people look for or are harder to find.

Thanks for the Tuff Stuff reference. I printed the list and checked all that I have and there are no high dollar value ones. Just several Clemens, Bonds, Chipper, Thomas, etc. And several other names that "book" in the $25.00 to $40.00 range. Looks like I will though a bunch on my mother in laws garage sale tomorrow for $5.00 each to start and see what happens. It was still fun going through.
    Thanks,
