Cap and Rays Guess the Grade

I don't see many darkside guess the grade posts so here's one that should be grading with PCGS in the next week hopefully. It's for a little side collection I maintain for those times when there's nothing else to buy. I don't expect too much variation in the guesses for this grade range.

Attractive example of the early Guadalupe y Calvo! XF40 would be my guess with a flat strike.

I like the look of it and agree with 2K, seems to be some wear/strike flatness on both sides. Nice pickup.

I like the coin and will offer a more liberal grade. I see worst day of 45. Unfortunately whatever lustre is present is difficult to gage.

Nice looking coin from a scarce mint. XF seems to be the popular grade.

I'm in the 45 camp if what I think I see is luster a 50-53!

As I expected most guesses were in the 40-45 range. I think it will come back XF40, possibly 45, and would be surprised with anything lower or higher.

Thought the grade would have posted by now, I'll update this thread when it does.

    Grade (finally) posted today.

The coin graded AU50, a little higher than I expected.

  • I just opened your thread. Nice example, and I have seen your posted grade. Funny, I really do not claim to know how to grade these very well, but my guess would have been AU-50. I know it appears to be weakly struck but I couldn't see that much wear for an EF. I guess I got lucky and in the end I'm glad your coin graded better than EF. Does PCGS have a CoinFacts category for these so we can view multiple grades?

Thanks for the thoughts and opinions all. Wouldn't you know it that after waiting a while for the right example, sending it in for grading and getting a nice result, then of course HA offers a high grade example with nice original skin. I was lucky enough to land this one in the auction last night. This mint is pretty tough to find in MS, so nice to find for my cap and rays mint set.

Put me down for 45 with a long shot at 50 on a really good day.

But also put me down as bowing before 2K's vastly superior knowledge on these.

congrats the 63 is a really nice catch - I don't totally agree with the grade on the first one above - maybe in hand there is some luster or... image
