Same card number

I've found quite a few in my Larkin collection where he gets the same card number in different (and in some cases back-to-back) years of the same set:

1987 RC & 1988 Donruss #492
1998 & 2000 Stadium Club #30
2001 & 2002 Donruss Classics #43 (same number also used in 2001 for Donruss Signature Series, Leaf Certified Materials, Studio)
2000 & 2002 Topps #85
2000 & 2001 Upper Deck #85

or different card companies using the same card number in the same year:

1992 Score & Stadium Club #100
2000 Skybox EX & Pacific Omega #36

This isn't even counting all the times his uni # has been used as a card number. Anyone else run into this in their player collections?

Off the top of my head, Yaz is card #280 in consecutive Topps issues: 1974 & 75. Now I'm gone searching for more. I think there are some Cappelletti ones too.

    E2A: Gino: 64 & 65 Topps #5. In fact, although they're a mix of Fleer & Topps, check out the card numbers for a 6 year run of his basic cards: 3, 5, 5, 5, 4, 3

None more for Yaz that I found

You will probably find that in some Topps sets from the 50s and 60s as well, as they often gave the STARS the "key" numbers in the set, ie. 100, 150, 200, 250, etc ...

    Edited to add: It happened a few times with MANTLE - #150 in 1958 & 1967; #200 in 1962 & 1963; #350 in 1960 and 1965.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

I was guessing that to be the case w/the key number assignments, I recall some Rose cards as well.

Not quite the same thing but from 1980-84 Topps card #666 were either team or individual Detroit Tigers cards. Someone at Topps must have hated them.

I know that with the starsand key numbers. But any idea or examples why Larkin or anyone else for that matter is associated with a particular number other than his uniform number?
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image
  • FYI, Jeter has 219 cards with the number 2 and 123 cards where he is the #1 card in a set.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all "right-thinking" people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as “bad luck.”

No idea, I just found it odd how many 'coincidences' there were. It's probably just a random curiosity, much like how they determine what card numbers are on a given sheet.

Definitely an oddity, Score did it to Larkin for his 1991 All-Star card.

They also gave mantle the 1962 MVP card #200 in the 75 set. Nice symmetry there.
