1987 Boardwalk and Baseball "No Slash" Variations?

I got ahold of about 30 of the aforementioned sets, hunting for a good Dwight Evans to grade, as well as any other HOFers or "No Slash" variants. I pulled three of what appeared to be the latter, except that, on closer inspection, the slash appears to be floating in the top left quadrant of the card. Would these qualify as an example of the variation? Or would they just be mundane printing errors? Or would they be examples of a 3rd ultra-rare variant worth millions of dollars that I could sell to fund my early retirement?

For you I certainly hope it's the latter. I never knew about this eventhough I collect Mattingly and own a few of these BB cards but never looked that closelyat them. I will now do so. Thanks for the heads up.
  • Not my auction, but here's a link to a recently ended Mattingly "no slash", posted here just to induce unquenchable feelings of desire in you:

Interestingly enough, the Mattingly in your link did not seem to have the displaced, floating relocated slash like the others posted here.

That is an interesting find. If I was still editing the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards (and if the SCBC was still covering post-1980 cards), I believe I'd add the "errant slash" as a third variation.

It is also my opinion that the no-slash variations are much tougher than a $12 price for Mattingly would indicate.

I sold a "no slash" Mike Schmidt card on eBay a couple years ago for $25

I wonder how many of the cards from the set have the no-slash and how many have the errant-slash? Does anyone have any information on if all 3 varieties exist for a particular card? Maybe it is a situation where there was a single printing error for the sheet, where some got an errant one and some got no slash all in the same print before cutting?

  • Is there something I could do to get these cards legitimized as a third variant? If I could get them slabbed as an "Errant Slash", I think it would be interesting to collectors of the cards in this set.

would love to see any Schmidt's you may have. Please PM me-

    Thanks
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

No Schmidts with a slash variation. Just the three cards above after having gone through 35 sets. All of the variants came from boxes from the same source, and there were none from boxes from another source. I'm going to a show where he sells next weekend, so I'm going to see if he has more sets. Would love to find a Dewey for me and a Schmidt for you.

Please let me know if you come across any weird Garvey cards from the set. I remember getting my (regular) set directly at Boardwalk and Baseball in early 1988. It was only open a brief time and I hit it just right after going through Navy bootcamp in Orlando.
I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

+1, I was not even aware that set existed, much less with variations. If only it had a Larkin in it...

Does it maybe have a Rose?

No Rose either, only Parker and Bell representing the Reds.

I completely forgot that this set existed. I picked one up on a trip to Disneyland in 1987. I just checked it. No slash variations, but a bunch of really nice cards!

I know some collectors who were able to get PSA to recognize a variant card after they first got SCD or Beckett to include the card as a variation in their publications. At SCD they went through Tom Bartsch, the current editor. But as Bob noted, SCD's current catalogs stop at 1980. Rich Klein over on Net 54 might know a good contact for Beckett. You could also ask moderator here how to get them to take a look at this thread . Hopefully scans of all three versions and Bob Lemke's "endorsement" would carry some weight

I picked up a complete set of these babies when we went to Disney World in the late 80s. Unfortunately I don't have them anymore. I sold about 30,000 cards last year and I think they were included. Would've been beat to hell anyway.

I will let you know. But I probably won't be selling them right off the bat.

I just checked my Garvey binders and I have 2 uncut strips with the no slash. One is a vertical pair and the other is a horizontal pair. These must have been in strips or sheets at one point, which makes sense. It was probably a print error that got pulled and "trashed". Oddly enough, Evans and Guerrero are the pairings I have with Garvey.

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.
