OT: Anyone Into Vintage Transformers & GI Joe?

Don't know where else to put this. Just wanted to see if anyone was into this stuff.

I'm not, but I still have my GI Joe from 1972/1973 -- w/tough-guy scar on his face
  • vettfanaticvettfanatic Posts: 643 ✭✭✭
I used to be a big collector of the 1980's G.I.JOE toys. Sold them all in 2007. Got back into card collecting shortly after that.

I couldn't resist some of it is so cool and brought back such awesome vibes; I went and copped some AFA G1 Transformers and a never-opened Stormshadow from 1982.

I still have my transformers stuff from when I was a kid. It's the one toy line I held onto.

Everything's a bit beat, bit I still have all the parts and packaging from Optimus Prime and Omega Supreme.
  • I love G1 Transformers and GI Joes, but Transformers tops the list of my all-time childhood toys. Back in 2001/2, I purchased the Toys R Us re-issues of the G1's. I picked up Optimus Prime, Starscream, Thundercraker, Jazz, Silverstreak, and Rodimus Prime. Ive kept them all unopened and sealed. I'm perfectly content with those although I would like a few more such as Soundwave. I still have my GI Joes too. About 30 of them but with no parts. Just the figures. Collecting cards is expensive enough and I don't have funds to collect everything. I pretty much have the things I loved as a child. Transformers, Baseball Cards along with the first 8 years of original baseball beckett magazines that I use to read religiously (missing just a few issues here and there however) and a massive Original NES Nintendo game collection along with about the first 89 Original Nintendo Power Magazines.

It was great to grow up in the 80's image
  • Yeah, I have some Transformers, Star Wars and Wrestling figures. Never went for the GI Joes, their DNA seemed a little too close to the Barbie and Ken dolls which my sisters had.

I don't collect them but had them as a kid. I always wanted 83-84 era storm shadow and snake eyes but never got them. I randomly checked eBay for them a few times and was amazed at the prices for them... So never got them.
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here

That's the Stormshadow I got. Was pretty amazed at the price but that's indeed what they go for. Just reminds me of when I'd go to the stores and see them on the rack, it was the highlight of a day when I'd be allowed to get one.

I copped Transformer G1's sealed of Rumble/Ravage, Mirage, and Starscream. G1's opened in great condition of Jetfire, Devastator giftset, Jazz, Sunstreaker, Soundwave, Megatron, Optimus Prime, Grimlock, Shockwave, Shrapnel, Bumblebee, and Windcharger. May try to complete the G1 set at some point down the line. They are pretty awesome to display on a shelf.

Holy cow. That is a world class GI Joe collection. World class. I hope you got a small fortune for it. Or a large fortune. That's tens of thousands based on my dabbling in the arena. What a meticulous displays as well. Much props to anyone who collects like that.

I've long notices those Transformers cards. Very cool pieces.

I have the one Transformers registry set. I love the cards.
  • I am a HUGE Joe fan. I am in the process of getting my collection in display order. Not as nice as Vett's. Vett man, I am trying not to cry after reading "old collection". How could you get rid of that. Your pics are a dream for me. Just to have Mint Snake Eyes v1 and v2 (peach or grey) and a mint Stormshadow v1 is my dream, yet alone all of those!!!!!!!!! Anyways, I have a cool "loose" collection and plan on getting them AFA encased (don't care as much about grading, just like the way they look in AFA cases). I had every Joe ever sold on the shelves including some really rare ones, and still have most of them in tubs from me and my brother's childhood. Not good condition but fun to go thru. Me and my brother would play in the backyard's of all the kids in our neighborhoods with their Joes and then invite them over to see our collection , image. Kids would go nuts. My favorite memory of childhood is the way we would begin every "battle". We would lay all the Joes out w/o weapons, flip coins for choosing order, pick joes for our "teams" and then do the same for weapons... then spend hours "setting up" our bases. That was the fun part!!!!!!!!!! We had more fun setting the Joes in position than we did battling!

Top Five favorite Joes (and my first picks in the battles):
    1. Snake Eyes (Of Course v2)
    2. Flynt
    3. Shockwave NitghForce Version
    4. Dialtone
    5. NightViper

Has anyone seen the 1985 Japanese Transformer Mini Card set? I'll drop a few scans here when I find them. I have a few on the way over from Japan as we speak. Pretty cool set and really hard to find.
  • I loved GI Joe's as a kid.

From about 2004-2006, I got about 80-90% of the figures I wanted from 1982 to 1987/88. Has anyone bought from Night Vipers Joes on ebay? He's a good seller.

I always wanted a 1985 Shipwreck, 85 Snake Eyes, 85 Crimson twins, Tomax and Xamot. And a few others for sentimenal reasons. Big Boa. Roadblock. He was really cool.

Some of the prices are interesting. Alpine, the Cobra guards, some of them seemed to have gone up.

I was originally going to buy most of the vehicles, but that got delayed. I have most of the smaller playsets from the 80's, like Cobra Bunker, Outpost defender. Those are a good buy if you're a GI Joe fan. Cheap, but good playability factor. I don't know if I'll ever get the big playsets...the USS Flagg? The Terror Drome? A lot of $$$ if you want them mint. In total, I have probably 90 figures (mint, loose) and 10-15 small vehicles and playsets.

As a kid I remember I use to sometimes use these rubber bands from my braces as a rubber band for the Joe's. Those middle rubber bands were always snapping.

I'd like to get the GI Transformers. Those things were cool as a kid....and very unaffordable. Didn't they retail for $40-60 back then? A lot of money for the average kid.

Toys then had so much imagination.....like the green construction set that turned into a robot? And the cassettes? Those things were great.

Kids in the 80's really had some amazing toys....also MASK. Does anyone collect M.U.S.C.L.E Men? I looked up some of those on ebay. A few are really rare and sell for $100-150?
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
I have the entire set of Muscle Men. They are so fresh. Won them in a spirited auction last year with stiff comp. I would not be denied. Too many memories there.
  • CNoteCNote Posts: 2,070
One of my buddies buys the Transformers Masterpiece toys, they run him anywhere between $150 -$250 I think. He got Soundwave and a couple cassettes not too long ago, they were pretty rad.

I loved G.I. Joes when I was a kid! Unfortunatly, I also loved firecrackersimage Anybody
else use them to play war?
I dont wanna grow up, Im a Toys-R-Us kid!

I has a few of the smaller Joe's as a kid but I was on the "tail end" of "action figures are cool" age range. I was in that zone of kids who can remember having the full size Joes and then the smaller ones.

I actually collect toys from the 70s myself. Predominately I focus on Mego action figures. I want to also build Big Jim and Evel Knievel collections as well.

In any event, fun thread. Go Joe!

This 1985 Japanese Yamakatsu Transformers Mini Card Set is pretty hard to find. Here are three that I managed to pick up:

    1. Ligier (Mirage)
    2. Meister (Jazz)
    3. Bonecrusher

If you are into these toys you have to check out the Toy Hunter on Wednesday nights on I think the Discovery channel. It is basically American Pickers but only 1970's and 1980's toys. it is a very cool show.
Collecting Yankees and vintage Star Wars
  • Hello all, I was a big collector of G.I Joes and a few Transformers. I still have them sitting in tubs, many parts and many pieces. When I moved, my little brother played with them and about a decade later, I took them all back to may place. Well, a decade after that, my sons are playing with th same ones. I'm not really into collecting any of the old 80's stuff but have over 100 G.I.Joes and Transformers of the newer stuff. Of course, they are all for my sons! image I tend to buy multiple copies and believe that today's toys will be just as important to the next generation when they start to make enough expendable income to relive their childhood. Maybe I'll bump this in 2040 and see where everything is at.
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
My 3 yr old son exclusively plays with G1 Transformers. It rules. I took him to Toys R Us once and showed him the Transformers aisle, and he wanted no part of the new jack stuff. I was quite proud of him in that moment. I looked for years and finally found an AFA sealed example of Rumble & Ravage on the card. Up there with my favorite cards for sure.

    Those Japanese cards look fresh.

Those cards are pretty neat- reminds me of what came with the toys back in the 80s. I still love my 85 Action Cards, the only cards I haven't sold from my collection in fact.
  • Still had most of my Transformers from growing up but have sold off most of them over the last 6 months as I need some extra cash for new camera equipment. Swapping childhood toys for adult toys. There are a few that hold sentimental value that I am keeping but most have been sold

I had the larger GI Joes from when I was younger in the 60 and early 70s. Had a GI Joe Foot Locker to keep all the different uniforms. I remember we got the uniforms for all of the different services.

I have most Joes and Vehicles 82-85, no boxes image. Lightly used however!! Would be fun to try and match all pieces with figures and sets. Have all file cards too.

Last figures I bought were Tomax and Xamot. I thought they were weird and moved on to skateboarding. Never really played Joes again.

I didn't do GI Joes growing up (I was born in 1980) but I was very much into Transformers and (don't laugh) I actually liked GoBots even better (hey they did actually come out first you know). Bumblebee was my favorite Transformer (I guess my favorite Deception would have to be Soundwave) and Scooter was my favorite GoBot. One thing I would LOVE to get someday that I've always wanted since I was a kid back then is a Voltron. image

OT: there are too many damn OT threads in this forum lately! There's a sports talk forum if you wanna talk about the latest suspensions or a player's hall of fame candidacy. And there is the non sports forum if you want to talk about something other than sports. Alot of us come here to look at and discuss sports cards and I guess I'm just enough of a grumpy old man that I think that's what belongs in this forum, nothing else. I'm sure I won't be popular for saying that, but oh well.

I think the same for the SMR! The last issue and several are about Star Wars and dumb made up stuff
that doesn't belong in a magazine called "Sportscard Market Report".

OT: I couldn't disagree more. 3 reasons-- First I don't have to click on the topic. If I don't care to read a "OT: Anyone Into Vintage Transformers & GI Joe?" like thread I can just ignore it. Second I have learned a lot about other areas of collecting that I would have never even knew existed and third no one hardly ever posts in the non-sports area. It is a waste of my time to continually check an area with so little participation (so I don't). I do respect your opinion though.

It's a chicken and the egg argument. Nobody posts in that forum because it's inactive. But it's inactive because most of the stuff that belongs in there is being posted here. If we moved all the stuff where it belongs, it won't be so inactive.

Got any of the Super Gobots? I always thought they were the most interesting. Trouble with Voltron is that there's so many different kinds (even if you only count the Lion Force one) to choose from, how do you know which one is the best (but also not outrageous in price)?
