1979 Topps #116 Ozzie Smith PSA 9 Mint....

1979 Topps Ozzie Smith

I had this one on my watch list. This card is breaking out to the upside. Current SMR is $370 and this one went for $567.

53% more then the stated book price.

This is one of the better relatively modern baseball cards to own I believe. I have only owned one example of the Ozzie Smith rookie and it had the typical OC qualifier.

These straight PSA 9's are in a major uptrend that will continue and take this card much higher in my opinion.

If you collect cards you like seeing these kind of results.

  • I would also imagine the centering is what set this apart from the other 9's. Solid 9 though!

This card in particular may have sold for more due to centering or two snipes that were set or any other number of factors but the trend has been higher for this card in this grade.

I remember a few years ago where one could easily be purchased in the $375 range and that floor is rising and I expect it to continue.

I am not sure if the VCP website that many use is able to show the average per calendar year for comparison but my belief is it would be higher over the past three years.

The two 20k sales of PSA 10's came out of no where and if those numbers stick it will raise the prices of strong 9's for sure.

If you purchased a card three years ago for $375 and now it is selling for $480 that is a 28% increase or 9.33% on average per year.

That is a fantastic return and an even better one as collecting cards is a hobby that many get enjoyment from.

Nice price for this Ozzie Smith. Feedback shows it was paid for and the sale completed.

This card has always owned a special place in my heart. I love this one and the Molitor/Trammel '78 because of their legendary difficulties in obtaining mint and centered copies.
It's a needle in a haystack finding centered ones AND without print defects

I picked this one up for around $375 a few months back

    Evening,

Even with the crappy scan (Out of Focus), I think your card looks head a shoulders better than the one above that went for $200 more!!image

    Ozzie PSA 9

I just happened to go through a few recent purchases of an EBAY member's ID that was posted in another thread and found this card.

Is this price an outlier or more the norm at this point?
  • Looks like it got a little boost there in bids to help bring it up.

This week, there was a big card that I was looking at for about 6 days and in the final few hrs, I had noticed that someone with just 3 positive feedback bid 12 times at $25 per bid and actually made the card rise up $600 from its already big price that it was currently at untill they stopped and he still wasnt the highest bidder! I spoke with Matt Miller because he knew all about the card I was chasing and told him what was going on and that I was now not going to bid on it because there was obvious shilling going on so so what did he do? Matt knew Bret from PWCC so he personally called him and explained what was going on and Bret actually removed those bid removed for me. Super nice of Matt to do so.

The bogus bidder did try it again at just one bid to maybe "put his name on the auction" to either see what it would sell for or to maybe see if PWCC also blocked him from bidding in the future but either way, he stayed away because I think he knew the card was now out of his range.

The Ozzie Smith currently running through PWCC is blowing up. A tremendous example with great centering. It looks like in this case the corners are what held it back.

    $960

That upper left corner would be enough to scare me away. Centering is great, but can't deal with soft corners lol

Really amazing what this card has been doing of late.

I'd really be up for spending some money on this card but it has got to be the most AWFUL photo ever for a HOF rookie. Maybe one of the worst photos ever used on a baseball card.

Like the 82 Topps Traded but obviously no where near the value of his RC.
Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

Two legitimate bidders over $900. The third was at $490 though.

<< <i>Two legitimate bidders over $900. The third was at $490 though. >>

How do you come up with this? I just looked at every bidder and the only one that looks suspect to me is the one who bid $490.

I was emailing last night with someone who has some bids placed on a card I do and I asked him what my bid percentage was with the seller because he could see it. It was 15%. The reason is I have not been bidding on lots of items because there has not been much coming up for me to bid on.

You and others would immediately assume I was a shill bidder with a bid percentage that high and with my multiple bidding strategy. I am not.

I am not certain if this price will be the norm but this auction looks legit to me. I realize shill bidding can be an issue but markets find their price if they are meant too and the recent Robin Yount auction is a good example. There ended up being multiple bids above the accused shill bidder.

You can see it also if you sign out of ebay.

Good information Maurice. I just checked it and it is 25% now.

There's obviously no way to definitively prove that any bid on ebay is a shill or not, so we all have to make up our own opinions on it. Based off the information available (feedback, bid %, bid amount, seller) I believe there were two accounts shilling it up. But that's just my opinion.

On the other hand, it appear there were two accounts that placed legitimate bids over $900, which certainly says something as well. Could just be two gotta-have-it bids. Either way, we need a much larger sample size when determining a new market for an item.

Not sure if this can easily be opened since I am logged in to Heritage's site.

Other than the possibility PSA deems it MIN SIZE this Ozzie Smith looks incredible. I am not certain I have seen a better looking copy. The centering is unbelievable for this card.

With SGC gem's selling for much less than PSA I would say 18k was a healthy price for this card.

    What a beauty.

T/B centering could be a little better??

T/B centering looks perfect to me. Stunning card.

just a tad short on the top although if not perfect thats the way id prefer it.....i agree that its one of the best I've seen in a long while if not ever.....$18k is a strong bid.....

Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

If I were running PSA I would love to see this card submitted. Assuming this card measures, it would be great for PSA to have this card in their holder because the better looking the card the higher the price relative to the grading company. This card looks amazing and if it were to cross to a PSA 10 I think it would be a 50k card over night. I obviously am not a collector of these high end cards but I understand grading and this is as close to perfect on the front as you can get and the back is clean but just a little OC. This is a true GEM and with the pop being so low this is what you want an example to look like.

The pop is 5 currently so it will be interesting to see if this card becomes number 6. If it measures I think this has to be a Gem Mint 10.

It is usually safe to assume that any Post-War high grade card in an SGC holder has probably already been submitted for attempted crossover into a PSA holder and PSA did not oblige. Maybe this is the exception though. Regardless, it is gorgeous and certainly worthy of a PSA 10. However, PSA just won't cross over cards very often
