Sold my Collection - Thanks to Lee (CDsnuts)

About a year ago I posted a question on here about selling my collection. I have been collecting on and off since age 6 (1974). Other than a few years off during high school and college I have been a pretty steady collector. About a year ago I determined I wasn't enjoying them so much anymore and thus decided to sell. One of the biggest sources of encouragement was posting on these boards and a couple people reminding me that I can always buy them again in the future. Great advice. I decided to sell and I will use the money to buy an old Porsche which I have already been saving for for many years.
I tried to sell myself at first but I just don't have the time and am not totally up-to-date on card values. I had a few inquiries on these boards after I put them on the BST but nothing substantive. Lee contacted me about consigning my collection. He offered his services for a reasonable percentage (I am not disclosing that deal but I was comfortable with the numbers we worked out). He was very helpful and supportive even before I agreed to have him help me. I looked into another consignment company on Ebay that was cheaper percentage wise but they would only do auctions. I liked the idea of buy it nows since so many of my cards were lower value and/or mid-grade cards.
Anyway, long story short Lee sold about 1,000 graded cards, 100 nongraded, and some other misc. stuff. He gave me Excel spreadsheets throughout showing how sales were going. He sent me money along the way.
Having Lee sell the cards for me was much easier emotionally for me. It was tough to send them out to him as I have all those years invested in them but once they started selling I just loved it. I knew I didn't have time to list them, ship them, etc... so Lee's service really worked for me. I saved a few really low value cards that I enjoy having that bring back memories (like '81 Joe Charboneau, some Larry Allen cards, etc...) but by and large I sold almost everything. Oh ya, I also kept my sets. I just am not quite ready to sell an '80 Topps set for $100 or whatever I would get for it. However, I sold 90-95% of my collection.
In total he sold over $25k worth of stuff for me. I guess I haven't gotten the last check but I am sure it's in the mail. Anyway, I just wanted to thank him and also let you know the option is out there if you decide to sell your collection.
I will post my pictures of my Porsche when I buy it.
BTW, Porsche shopping is really fun.

Just kidding. I've been there. About 6-7 years ago I sold off 70-80% of my collection, keeping only a handful of cards that I really wanted. I started collecting a few sets here and there again in the past year or two. You're right, though, the cards will always be there if you want them again. Good luck to you with the Porsche, I've been considering selling off some cards to buy one in a few years. Maybe post some pictures when you get yours and it'll give me some motivation.

T206 Set - 300/524
I'm planning to do it with stuff I rarely look at and just collecting dust - taking up space.
+1 to Lee for doing a great job for you.
More importantly - good luck on the Porsche hunting!
I would like the '56 Speedster from Doc Hollywood.
I'm in a similar situation, except barely half as many years. Stopped having any interest in these things around four or five years ago. Just sitting in boxes. Finally going through it all. It's a lot of work separating the junk from the valuable from the maybe junk, might be worth something. Some days I just want to throw it all away, but then I remember if I get money it means I can pay for rent and groceries without having to work
seethesenuts definitely earned his percentage and deserves the compliments
I'm betting you'll enjoy the car
Lee is definately a straight shooter and knows his stuff, glad it worked out for both of you.
Truth be told, I've only consigned for a handful of people and this was the largest collection of stuff I've sold off that was not my own. I know there are big guns out there like Probstein and PWCC, and my intention is not to compete with them because I don't really have the time or resources to become a consignment churning machine like they do. I have my own selling strategies and I think it all depends on what you are selling when looking to maximize profits. I'm always open to taking consignments, so if anybody is thinking about selling off their stuff and wants to hear about how I do things you can shoot me a PM.
