Which will go bye-bye first---the cent or the dollar bill?

Both are dropping in purchasing value while the cost of making them keeps going up. I wouldn't be surprised to see the government eliminate them both in the same legislation. What do you think?

It's more likely the dollar bill will be eliminated now that Senator Ted Kennedy is dead. He protected the Crane Paper Company in his home state who makes the paper for our currency.

1.2 cents for everyone to turn the zillion ones out there,
there would be enough for years , no?,......and still save taxpayer money
With:
* Crane & Co. of Massachusetts in the dollar corner
* Jarden Zinc of Tennessee in the cent corner
Who will last longer?

Just make sure you're not on the closing shift.
I think everyone is missing the larger picture.
My son hardly ever uses any cash at all.
He uses his debit card for almost all of
his purchases. So do many of his
generation.
After all of us old codgers are gone there
will be no one left who uses money at all.
The cent and the dollar may go first, but
in the end, it will all go away. Wonder
what will become of coin collecting then??

Agree. The country would have saved better than 100 million dollars by now.
The benefit would accrue to the minority of voters that actually pay federal taxes. In other words, eliminating the dollar bill is, for politicians, a vote losing proposition.

They will fade, but they're be around...at least for the foreseeable future. I've seen several businesses quit taking credit cards because their fees are too high. Plus, in a lot of small private transactions, cash is king.

Unless everyone is equipped with a card reader and a bank account, coins/currency will always have its place in society.

Card readers won't be necessary. You probably already have
the technology now to buy anything you want without cash
or a card reader.
My iPhone will already read those funny looking square bar
codes with the dots inside them, take that information and
compare prices at other locations while I'm standing there
trying to decide if I want to buy it.
How much harder would it be to put those bar codes on
a Big Mac wrapper for you to scan with your phone, and
it then takes the price right out of your bank account.
Even what I have described is probably too primative for
what is in store for us in the very near futrue. Just because
you can't see it, doesn't mean it won't happen

It makes sense to eliminate $1 bills but I doubt it will happen as soon as eliminating the cents.
I'll miss searching the cents!
<< <i>we (americans) hate change.

Americans handle change just fine. Consider the blinding speed of cultural change with all the tech advancements over the last generation.
At issue is the lack of any demanding constituency for dropping the cent and the paper dollar, vis a vis those who have a vested interest in their preservaiton--along with the handful of curmugeons who write letters to the editor.
Now that we have a major debt crisis, though, "low hanging fruit" such as the cent/nickel and paper dollar may at last be shown the door during the budget cuts.

I hear this argument frequently but who walks around with a bunch of singles? When I get at least five of them things I start trying to unload them. Dollar coins will end up in the drink holder like quarters and used frequently.

Now on the my main question. Who is the dumbf*** that made the nickel larger than the dime?
IMO the dime should be the size of the nickel, the penny should be the size of the dime and the dime should be the size of the nickel.

<< <i>"Which will go bye-bye first---the cent or the dollar bill?" >>
Official removal of either would be confirmation of government failure to preserve the value of the US Dollar, so I don't expect either to happen anytime soon. But for most people, the Cent is already worthless, and a nuisance.

I and many, many Americans or even people in the world do not have nor plan on having an IPhone. IPhone's are for those that can afford a regular phone bill in addition to those who are totally unaware of the wireless piracy which exists in the world. Besides, I would not relish the idea of giving nor storing my bank account information on a handheld telephone device which can get lost, be broken or worse yet, stolen.
