Raw purchases that turned out golden after grading.

Here are a couple of my raw purchases:
1975 Gary Carter Topps Paid $18 on ebay graded a PSA 9
1979 Jim Rice OPC Paid $2 on Ebay graded a PSA 10 Pop 1
1975 opc jim rice paid $15 on ebay graded a psa 8.5 pop 1 only 1 9 no 10's
1979 pete rose opc paid $7 graded a psa 9 pop 5
Paid $150 for 1984 Fleer update set got a bgs 9.5 clemens and puckett
Obviously if you are 4sc or psa set guy, etc. you have many thousands better than this, but for your average collector that grades every now and then, I would like to hear about some of your finds.

<< <i>My best was a 1957 Topps Ed Bailey for which I paid $15. It graded a PSA 9, pop 5. >>
Yes, I get several hundred graded per year from PSA. I get most of the stuff from 1980 and up graded by Beckett, especially the auto cards.
Some of the previous posts are definitely impressive--good eyes! I think mine are getting worse.
<< <i>1933 Goudey Sport Kings......seller thought trimmed.....came back PSA 7.5. >>
What card came back a 7.5?

I think I got one 9, a common that sold for $60 or $100. I probably tripled my money on the whole thing.
Did anyone ever buy any raw cards from Ira Hirschhorn? He use to advertise in SCD in the 90's. Those were interesting days. He use to advertise cards as "mint", and some of them came back mint. I remember getting some low pop 61 topps commons. For $8 or $10 each. I think one I ended up selling for $100 or $125. But then the pops started to change in a few years, and the game was over.
Bought raw from my favorite shop 8/14/2004, came back as my first 9 in my first submission to PSA.
Bought raw on eBay 8/3/2003 (for $6.05!)
Bought raw from my favorite shop 12/28/2005
Bought raw at a local show 10/14/2006
Bought as part of a raw set (online 4/25/2010); it's the only "Laughlin Old-Time Black Stars" that's been graded 10 (at last year's National in Baltimore)

These came from a lot that averaged less than a buck a card:
From a cut card case for around 80 bucks - loaded with great cards:
Traded - raw - for some of my table space at a local Sunday show around 1992:
Got it for about 40 or 45 bucks before he went into the HOF:

From Rotman Auctions for 30 bucks:

1985 Topps Football (starting in psa 8) - #9 - started 05/21/06
'75 OPC Gillies
It graded an 8, which now resides in my collection:
I was absolutely shocked to have scored off NESC. I guess there are some deals to be had. Who knew? As a point of reference, I recently sold this PSA 8 Gillies...
Gillies 8 # 2
...for $232.50. I paid a whopping $3.24 for that one on eBay late last year.

Hi David
I bought this card back around 1992 from Greg Bussineau of Superior Sportscards - now Legacy.
I asked him for a nice "type card" of a T206 and a 33G. He sent both cards as Nmmt. The 33G was a common - came back a 5. I paid - I believe 85 bucks for both.
I agree - a nice card and a keeper!
It's a good looking 5:
From Barnett of SCD for 60 bucks:
From Rotman Auctions for 40 bucks:

I know these are non-sports, but I bought the entire set for $5.00 from a man in the UK after my son and I were reading about the Seven Wonders of the World during father and son bed time. I cannot wait to get them back and see them!!!

1. A lot of a dozen Kirby Puckett rookie cards, purchased several years ago for $120 delivered. Seller did not get too descriptive as far as condition, but provided great scans. There was one '84 Fleer Update, and the rest were an assortment of the '85s. I sent five of them in to Beckett, and pulled:
*'84 Fleer Update BGS 9.5
*'85 Fleer BGS 9.5
*'85 Topps BGS 9
*'85 Donruss BGS 9
*'85 Donruss BGS 8.5
I still have the Fleer Update RC and the nicest of the Topps RC's I didn't send in. Sold off the other 10 cards over the next few months for a total of roughly $200.
My guess is that if I chose to sell the Fleer Update I could get another $150-$200. Not a half-bad ROI.
2. I bought a very nice looking raw '78 Topps Lou Brock on the Bay for one dollar. It is still in my collection, but now resides in a PSA 10 holder.
-CDs Nuts, 1/20/14
*1956 Topps baseball- 97.4% complete, 7.24 GPA
*Clemente basic set: 85.0% complete, 7.89 GPA
Out of the 3 sets I had
About 50 PSA 8s and 20 PSA 7s graded from the 1965 FB set with low pops.. But Bigges star grading an 8 was Don Maynard broke this one up and sold all cards individualy.
1972 FB set All the stars graded 8s and got about 20 PSA 8-9s of the high numbers and about 50 PSA 8-9s of low pops and commons. And a PSA 8 Staubach. Sold as complete set
1969 Set all graded PSA 7-8s of the stars except the Piccolo wasnt in the set. PSA 8s of Sayers,Namath,Csonks, Starr, Blanda to name a few sold as complete set
Also bought a raw Clemente Rookie that I had graded only a 7 but it finally made it into the 8 it diserved but after I sold it.
Some highlights
<< <i>Also bought a raw Clemente Rookie that I had graded only a 7 but it finally made it into the 8 it diserved but after I sold it. >>
Well that sucks. Did it sell as an 8 or did the person keep it after the bump?
Buying Vintage, all sports.
Buying Woody Hayes, Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, and Jesse Owens autographed items
Also they bought it to sell it and yes it was sold again

<< <i>Well there are several to mention but the one that stands out is the 57 Gino Cimoli I bought at a show for $20 in 2006, graded PSA 8, and sold for $700+. Me likey those deals.
That's about what Cimoli was worth as a player.
Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
From the same person last year I picked up a 1975 Topps set for $450 and sold 3cards for $2k+
These Twins-issued cards came in cello-wrapped covering and quite often Kirby was the first card showing. I won an auction 3-4 years ago and contacted the seller. He said he'd send me one with Kirby on the inside. I liked the results! This card was sold to the current leader of the Puckett Set Registries for a nice return. He even thanks me for it in the comments!
