Helping the daughter of former Pro Football player, Al Day.

The other day I sold a cheap mid grade card on eBay ... 1960 Fleer Football #106 - Al Day. (I never heard of him.) I get paid and I notice that the last name of the buyer is also Day. I ask her if she is related to the player. She writes back and tells me that she is Mr. Day's daughter. We exchange a few more emails and it turns out that she is trying to buy PSA graded examples of the card to give to her relatives. This is the ONLY card that Al Day ever had. (He played one year, 1960, for the Broncos). His daughter did not find out until 1998 ... Twenty Years after her dad's untimely death at the age of 41 ... that her dad had his own card.

Since she is looking for more of her dad's card, I told her I would ask around and see if anyone had any graded copies for sale. VCP on a PSA "7" is ~ $10.00 and an 8 is ~$15.00.

If any of you guys do have one for sale, please let me know.

THANKS!!!
STAY HEALTHY!

Doug

  • Hey Doug,

I do not know how serious you want to get with this, but if you really want to buy those two cards mentioned, you can count me in to chip in on the price. I think if ten of us cough up $20 bucks we can send her those two cards.

    Let me know.

  • Hey Doug,

I just purchased three of his cards on ebay, and I will send them into PSA for grading. When they get back maybe you can get me her address and I will send them to her.

Hey guys ... thanks for your input. Since I don't believe she is a "collector", I think a PSA "9" would not be appreciated much more than a lower graded card. (6,7,8 ... Although I just went back to one of his daughter's emails and she said she purchased a PSA "9" from eBay about one year ago.)

Wolf - I went to the website to purchase the "6". They didn't take paypal so I emailed them to see if there was a way to pay with paypal.

Brian - WOW! How nice of you. LMK when you need Cheryl's (daughter) address.

What started off as a post to help Cheryl find a few cards of her dad may turn out to be yet another amazing show of generosity from the great members of this board!!!!

Let's keep this post going. How cool would it be for me to send a package from our members containing numerous graded examples of her dad's card to Cheryl.

Edited because I can't friggin spell.

great gesture Doug, but I'm curious why she only wants graded examples?

<< <i>great gesture Doug, but I'm curious why she only wants graded examples? >>

She said she was now looking for graded examples (I am guessing to preserve the card.) At first she found one card and MADE COPIES to give to her relatives. Then she found "raw" cards and gave them to them. I don't think it has anything to do with making $$$$, after all it's a cheap card.

I wasn't thinking there was a profit motive in her request, I just thought that she could probably obtain more cards cheaper raw....(without having to resort to making photocopies, etc.).......If preservation is her motive, a top loader works just fine IMO

IMF ... sorry I took it the wrong way ... HOWEVER, I considered what I THOUGHT you meant a VERY VALID POINT ... we all know too well what some people will do for a buck ... and some of us here on the boards have been burned by it.

Nice cause, here Doug. Good job! I've got some eBay bucks to use up and, since I'm no longer on the market for '62 Topps cards, I'll keep an eye out for more examples of her father's card...

Very nice of you Mike. I think she will be quite surprised when she receives the cards, as she has NO idea that some people will be sending them to her as a gift!

  • Great! I will send the three I bought to get graded this week. Unfortunately, I will send it in on the special so it might take a while to get them to her.

  • Hey Doug,

I finally received the cards back from PSA and sent Cheryl the three graded 1960 Fleeer Al Day cards. It was very cool for you to start this thread, and she truly is grateful for you doing so. I know there were others that sent her cards, but she really appreciates the cards that were sent. So thank you again for bringing this to the board.

  • That was an exceptionally nice thing for you guys to do.

I looked up the Al Day card when I read this thread, and the first thing I thought of was that it would look better if it said Eastern Michigan University with that green and white jersey.
