Wouldn't it be cool if PCGS and/or NGC provided an option to have your coins holdered inside a ring

Wouldn't it be cool if PCGS and/or NGC provided an option to have your coins holdered not inside an inert holder, but inside a ring of cardboard........impregnated with random amounts of reactive material......like sulfur......

You wouldn't want the level of concentration to be consistent or even applied consistently to the cardboard.....that way these new holders would produce coins in varying configurations with varying levels of color intensity......

Of course you probably wouldn't want to holder a classic rarity in one but think of all the ugly white new silver coins and even the millions of white Morgans that need a nice ring of color applied...and who better to do it then one of the grading services......

....the Toning Replication Service.....

Maybe....I like to think of it as a methodology to imitate the way coins toned that were stored in Wayte Raymond styled holders which actually gave many awesomely "originally" toned coins their awesomenes.....

(And by the way, speaking of mushrooms...do you remember a poster years ago starting a thread entitled "Do you enjoy looking at your coins more when you're high?" That one just killed pretty fast, and of course, justifiably......we're here to be a positive influence on everyone and illegal drugs are not good for you, especially young people and also for old people who are likely to drop a burning roach into the couch.)

Maybe they should just give you a pair of rose or lime or orange or other colored glasses with each submission.

No, I'm afraid that would not be acceptable.
  • Not sure if that would work out too well. Maybe Mr Willis or Mr.Hall can chime in here and give you their thoughts on that one.

I dont think a ring would be needed. All you would need is the label to contain the stuff to make them tone. Kind of like the old PCI slabs image.

It is, you could include a set of coin world holders for each denom., maybe some bu 90% coins, and treated inserts. Would be like a coin "Chia Pet". Anaconda should patentimage The SPCC (the soc. for the prevention of cruelty to coins) will strongly object to this idea though

We could engage in a numismatic conspiracy of unequaled proportions......everyone, right now, raise your right hand.....repeat after me.....'I will not tell the SPCC anything about the new cardboard rings inside of PCGS' and NGCs' new holders......'

    Ok, it's a go.

Actually, what is to prevent someone from coming up with the Anaconda Professional Coin Toning Kit....they can do all the work and I'll write the disclaimer and legal stuff.

Slim chance of doing that and then guaranteeing the coin. Not know what sort of toning would develop, it would be too risky.

I wouldn't advocate a toning kit to tone coins with the intention of toning them to try and fool a grading company.....therein the disclaimer and "legal stuff".....

This is still the United States of America, not Cuba......if someone wants to add color to a coin because it makes it prettier in their eyes, there is absolutely nothing and no one that can stop them.

No. What if they screwed up and put the wrong kind of ring in and ruined a really nice toner. Do you suppose that they would offer different rings for different colors? Jess think, you could send it in ever few months to be reholdered/reringed [in other words a ring job] and presto; after the 7th time you'd have the perfect rainbow.

I like the "toning kit" idea.

    why not??

Could be as simple as cardboard made with a high level of sulfates, and a slightly oversize plastic holder. Mayve a few very small holes around the outside of the cardboard ring that would allow you do dip it in water every so often. That would wet the carboard slightly and let the sulfates interact more.

Why not.?? sounds like a Patent wating to happen.

There is no way that PCGS will create a special holder to AT your coins for you. No way at all.

What if the coins toned badly? Would the TPGs have to make good on their grade guarantee?
  • ANACONDAANACONDA Posts: 4,692
No, it would certainly have to be totally outside the grading of coins....they just have all the equipment and the money to make it happen. You pay them to holder your coins "in need" of toning and you roll your dice and you take your chances.

I would recommend that they date the coins when they holder them in the PCGS Professional Toning Holders ...then in the years to come, the older coins in a PCGS 2012 holder (first generation professionally toned coins) that are 25 years old.....and toning nicely.....would be like a fine whiskey. (Actually whiskies pretty much top out in their late teens....)

And, professional toning would protect the coins....you don't put copper gutters up hoping they stay red. And you don't clean a fine bronze with anything else other than distilled water because you could strip the protective oxidation.

I'm not sure this will fly unless the nicely toned coins are given an automatic pass for NT when it comes to get them graded. Of course, the fact that coins have been toned in the holder already makes this a bit problematic.

    Ponder this

Put a mint fresh ms69 or ms70 into the enhanced holder
Have a picture done by the slabbing company

    Wait a few years

And you get a nicely toned coin you can call NT

Calling a coin NT doesn't make it NT. Don't forget that Adrian's proposal involves impregnating the cardboard with sulfur and other chemicals to induce toning which sure sounds like ATing to me.

What a terrible idea. Storing coins such that they are quickly damaged.
It is not something I would consider.
