The very first Verizon Wireless Promo card from 1956? LOL
Obviously I have no idea, but I agree it is a nice looking card.

Do you have a pic or detail of the back?
  • it is Yogi Berra. what do i win.
seriously I think it is a card out of tcma/sspc all time great set, or a oddball regional set. I am assuming the back is blank? image

    Here it is on ebay.
    ebay

The seller says it has a Saul Rogovin #75 back. Saul Rogovin was #75 in the 1953 Bowman color set.

I just sent a question to the seller....how can that card be a 53 bowman when the front and back clearly show they are different dimensions?

That was exactly what I was thinking when I looked at the listing.

    He responded quickly...

"The problem is this card has been altered. I think what has happened is that some one found a sticker of yogi Berra and put the sticker on the card of Saul ? I've had the card for a number of years and thought I had a Berra card. But the card of Berra doesn't even look like this. The problem is that the first picture was taken by my IPhone while the 2nd picture was taken by a digital camera and added today at the request of another Ebayer. The question does it have any value to you?"

Looks like maybe a TCMA late 70's or early 80's card.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Yup that's what I think, a TCMA card that was skinned and put on a Legit 53 bowman back.

TCMA created a '53' bowman set around 1979? IIRC

That must be a '51 Berk Ross that we've heard so much about...

  • I believe this shot of Yogi was used for a SPORT magazine cover back in the early 50's possibly 1952.

    I guess you are correct!

And it is for sale HERE on eBay.

EDITED TO ADD: Looking at some advertisements for sales of this issue, it looks like it is from 1951.

It's definately not the 1979 TCMA. The Berra card is number 2 in that set and there is no card for Sal Rogovin in this set. I hope this helps and it would be great to hear what you find out about the card.

You would think that he would have put that info in the auction description. Or, at least add that info now.

I was thinking that they used a legit 53 Bowman back and a TCMA front.

Just because the original photo was used in 52 on a life magazine does not mean TCMA did not use it as well.

    I'm just guessing here.

    Steve

edited to add: Didn't a company named Dover also produce a reprint of this set?
    Good for you.

As usual. Your card knowledge is overwhelming.
  • Mystery solved. The curiosity got the best of me so I paid $6 for it. It was a sticker placed on top of a 1953 Bowman Saul Rogovin. The border you see in the picture is the border of the actual card; the sticker ends where the black ends.

Shooty, thanks for the update. Any idea what issue the sticker came from?

No idea. I just peeled away a little bit of the corner. I'll put up some clear scans this weekend.

    Shooty

Are you positive it's a sticker? Could it be simply a front of another card that was skinned

and pasted onto a legit Rogovin back?

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Good question, Steve - I'm not sure. The way it peeled off, I just assumed it was a sticker (it's pretty thin).
